re power tornado 5mtr

Hi All,

I am looking to repower my 5Mtr Tornado, currently with a merc 60, which while OK I thnk needs a bit more grunt and top end. Been looking at the new Yam 70 FS, only online and reading some favourable comments.

What do other RIBers think, in theory mine could take an old fashioned 90hp but that's clearly out of the question unless I want to buy 2nd hnd.

My 60 is both pretty loud at WOT and needs a bit more top end,

What do others run on these sized RIBs?

If I am to buy, new when is the best time to look for a deal and any suggestions where to source it? I am in the Bedford area so very central.

The small merc 60 is good as my Aux just fits clamped on to the transom next to it

weight wise they are pretty light and everything I've read is good

The 80 hp is 50 kg more than the 70 hp at 119 kg and £6995 at Ron hale marine for the 70 hp about £700 difference between the two 170 kg for the 80 hp

I had a 60 hp big foot on a quicksilver 500 cabin boat brilliant engine very fuel efficient

I run an Etec 90 on my 5.4 and she goes superbly .. used to have the previous owners Yam 75 on it .. but felt it could do with a few extra gg's... The 5.4 hull is absolutely superb IMHO for its length .. all my previous RIBS were longer .. but this hull is surprisingly good for its length .. just needs the 90 to give you all the options. I Chose the Etec for its light weight .. I would think carefully about any other options that are heavier, though.

Does anybody actually run one of these new Yam 70hp FS on a RIB?

I am a little bit shy of going significantly heavier than my little merc at 109Kg as with a 5mtr RIB its easy to get it ass heavy.

What's DIY servicing like on the yam?

Which etec dealer would people suggest?

What is boats length exactly .. is it 5m dead ?

Its 5mtr dead length and also light ish compared to some other makes I think.

My 70 yam is on our zodiac 500 and it's great. Had a 60 Mariner previously and the 70 certainly has a better torque and we hit 40mph. It is also so much quieter than the 60. Highly recommend it. Very good on fuel as well and the freshwater flush hose is a clever device.

The most important thing is the after sales service not a million miles away. use that rule to reduce the number of engines. Then select on HP weight etc

I got mine from Yampower in Glasgow. They are about 2hours from me but it was worth the journey. Their fitting and work is top notch.

Aye.. 90 be a bit strong unless you have the will for it then .. I'd prefer 5m + for that .. which is what your profile says

I got a premix burning 60 on the back of a 5m 450 kg 45 rig. Tops 30 knots.

Thing is that it's all relative. I had an SR4 with a 25. Was great and took me where I wanted to explore. Most on here bang on about how an SR4 should have a 50.....

As the guy with the 25 I would say b*ll*x. It's all down to your situation.

I just noticed a Mariner 80hp efi 4 stroke with 170 hrs on it for sale on done deal in Ireland. He does not give an age for it but it is advertised for 3450 euro. It would work out cheap in your money. I have no vested interest in the engine

Hi. I will try and put a pic up. It's a tornado 5 m bought new in 98 and used for a bit of diving and general leisure use.

It's got s built in fuel tank of 60ltr, two seat modules and an A frame with some lights radar reflector and bits and pieces on.

I am presuming its lightish as its on an unbaked trailer, supplied by Barnet marine although I am thinking of getting it weighed. I think the suggestion of s four stroke 80 Merc would be heavier than I would like. The other consideration would be trying to remain able to fit my aux on the transom alongside without any bracket . Thank you all for the advice. Dave
