RANT TIME Advice needed arrrrgh

Well following on from my prev thread here
http://www.rib.net/forum/f36/mariner...ase-48222.html

I cant help but feel im being shafted.
Took my new to me Mariner 30m engine in to a dealer for a service in Jan.All good the guy even commented on how well it ranEngine returned to work and covered up on engine stand.
So Holiday booked for week in Devon begining of June.
Last weekend decided to have a trial build of Sib,engine and steering ect.
Uncovered engine to find puddle of oil underneath it.
Returned back to dealer explaining that since the service engine hasnt been used just sat in a warm dry workshop on an engine stand.
So get phone call following day to say it wasnt oil it was petrol from a loose pipe that had run down the exhaust and washed it out so it looked like oil.
BUT when he dropped it in the tank to run it up it ran rough and he said the head gasket has gone.
Now im far from an expert but i would have thought that it would have to be used for that to happen. When i asked if a compression test had been done he said no but that is what the problem is.
I did one when i purchased it and it was 120psi on both cylinders.
So gasket ordered and 3 days later no sign of it.I rang the supplier who he said he was getting it from and guess what no stock in country till 26th of this month.
Now at this stage im panicing as the holiday is drawing nearer. So i sourced a gasket my self and dropped it off this morning.
Gets a call this afternoon and its all back together and guess what it still runs rough.
He reckons hes had carb of twice blah blah blah.
So Rant over.I still havent got an engine for my holidays.
Does anyone know or have any idea what the problem could be.
Or if any knows of anywere that rents out engines??
Pete

Where in Devon are you going ?

I've a Yam 15hp 2 stroke which I may consider "renting" if it helps. Not something we usually offer but sounds like you've been through the mill.

Not sure how it would work in terms of logistics/details though

PM me any ideas along with details on your intended use/hours/storage etc.

Insurance is the problem. Sell it on Monday and buy it back "broken" on Friday works!

I also have a Zodiac 3.8m rib, trailer, Tohatsu 25hp 2 stroke package which may be another option. It's going to be my 8 year olds boat, collecting tomorrow. That's set up for remotes etc and the engine is locked on/bolted. It's nothing pretty, but should be great fun.

See how you get on with your repair. Hopefully it will all come good in the end

Ok dropped in today and found the following.
It runs but is very difficult to start and without the tick over screw turned right in it wont tick over.
Whilst its running it keeps spitting and back firing.
He says he has checked the fuel pump (i have seen it running another engine to be fair)
Has swapped the plugs checked timing 3 deg before tdc (does that sound correct) taken carb of agian and cleaned it all out.
Has anyone any ideas ?
Pete

Possible read valves back of where the carb bolts to thr engine sticking or broken ,
Though could still be timing that's out or not sequenced with the throttle linkages .

If you unscrew the adjusting screw /needle and take it out of the carb can you notice any rings or ridges around the tip of the needle point ,its usually made from brass and so is a soft metal
ridges can be made if it has been screwed in too far the seat then can score a ring or ridge around the tip which then makes adjustment hit or miss often with nothing inbetween .
Or is there any wear on the carb or seals / packing/gaskets that could be causing it to draw air.
