Quietest small outboard?

Any nominations for the quietest 5ish hp outboard? Presumably it will be a 4-stroke, but is there much difference between makes?

Are the 2.5/3.5hp motors noisier than the 4/5/6s?

IMO the 4/5/6hp motors are significantly quieter.

The twin cylinder motors are quieter (smoother) than the singles, although they generally start at 6hp and are heavier too

The little honda's are quite good, air cooled too

Quite large on the top for an aux though

Dunno, it didn't fit on between the outboard and the aframe But liked the air cooled no impeller approach

I heard an air cooled Honda when I was down on the helford this eve. It was coming out of the Fal 5m away. :-/

The air cooled hondas are very noisy, I changed mine for a little Mercury two stroke that was silent in comparison. Going a bit bigger to 6 & 8 hp, the Yamaha 2 strokes are also much quieter than the equivalent Mercury 4 strokes.

Spot on. We experimented with different outboards on my dads sailing boats. Quietest single cylinder 5hp was Yamaha 2 stroke, he bought a 5hp Honda to replace it and it was significantly noisier.

However the 2 cylinder, 6hp+ 4 strokes are really nice and quiet (All major brands)

Is there such a beast a a two cylinder 6hp outboard? A quick look at the specs for the main manufacturers shows everything below 8hp as singles.

Is a 4 stroke single much quieter than the equivalent 2 stroke?

The older 4 strokes were twins, as were the 2 strokes. Not sure on the latest models.

Assume you're looking at 4-strokes?

If, on the other hand, you're looking at older 2-strokes, the Soozook DT6 is a nice 2-cyl motor - smooth & relatively quiet.

Got one here if you're interested - 1986 longshaft.

Ha ha! Actually it's been chewed to death by my rats over the years. They've eaten the throttle cable, twist grip, choke lever, most of the propeller and even some of the cowling. Bloody swines they are..!!

Johnsorude used to do a lightweight 4Hp twin..... (something like 13Kg fueled?) Thin as well, so fits in small gaps.

I am looking at sticking a load of soundproofing round the inside of the cowl, if that helps to put the noise into perspective!

Hi John, I thought you had mentioned a while ago that you were going down the electric outboard route. I take it that this did work out the way you wanted?

Hi John, the tohatsu built 2.5/3.5 4 strokes are lovely built engines and quiet too. These are Mercury, mariner and Tohatsu. Yamahas also are just as good in my opinion. Hondas are exteremely popular due to centrifugal clutches and being air cooled but are noisier than the aforementioned engines
