Propellor Question

I am in dire need of a new propellor for my Mercury 60hp.
Julie from Steele Dev have advised on a 13" pitch.
On ebay at the moment the same chap is advertising a "Propulse variable pitch Prop" and a "Black Max" 12" pitch prop in VGC. With any luck I can buy both for the price of one new one. As one who points his boat and goes, I know little about propellor pitch etc. Please advise?

Whats on the boat now ( pitch & diameter?) and what speed and at what rpm are you getting that speed?

Hi Kernow
I am getting approx 30mph max on GPS. Sorry dont remember the Revs at that speed but it certainly wasnt high.
I have just taken the old Prop off the only thing I can find stamped on it is 19 and A. It measures approx 5.5" from the tip of the blade to the centre.
It has certainly taken a battering in its time and has obviously been refurbished in the past.

As I understand it (probably about to get 'orribly shot down!) The pitch is the distance a prop will move forward on one rotation, the higher the pitch the greater the distance covered, its a bit like gearing on a car. That 19 on your prop may indicate its a 19" pitch which I think would be too big for your 60hp, this would also account for your relative lack of top speed and failure to achieve maximum rev's, ( my 90hp came with a 17") There are many threads on here about prop choice the best advice is to try some and see.

I have gone for the safe option and bought a 13" Prop from Steele Developments who have never let me down in the past.
Does anyone anything about these propulse variable pitch propellors?

Well I bit the bullet and bought a Propulse Variable Pitch Propellor - It has just arrived and looks good. Whether it performs as the manufacturer says remains to be seen? They say it is stronger than aluminium and it is a lot lighter. Cant try it until next weekend at Calshot but will keep you posted?Martyn

I have to say that this Prop lived up to my limited expectations.
We have just returned from Calshot where we visited Pompey Harbour
on Friday and went up the Beaulieu River Saturday so completely different conditions. Unfortunately ,as the one I removed was way past its sell by date, I cannot really compare it with an aluminium prop but it performed well throughout with good fuel consumption and accellaration. Definately should be considered when you need a replacement?
