Propeller Solutions

Having had the HD gearboxes fitted to our Verado's, we found that dispite the ratios being the same, the engines seemed to be over geared, with a reduction in RPM at WOT.

We were recommended to discuss with Thomas at Propeller Solutions and he recommended take down the pitch by an inch.

The job was done very quickly and to a high standard and would recommend for any of your prop problems.

Took me almost a year to get my props back off him, by which time they almost needed doing again!

Thought I'd give him a second chance when I had a prop with cracked blades. First step was for him to send me a couple of special tig welding rods to see if they could be welded before I shipped them to him for finishing. I gave up waiting for the rods.

I think you probably need to be in his face to get things done.

Are you sure? As far as I was aware, both the old 4.8inch and the new SD 5.44inch gearboxes have 1.85 ratios whereas the HD has a 1.75 inch....

Also, how are you finding the solid prop hub or has it not been an issue

Without in any way dismissing Martini's experience, a friend of mine sent his S-S outboard prop to Steel Developments recently, it was fairly badly chewed, and it came back in due course, to Ireland, perfectly sorted.

Please try and read the OP's message in future, this thread is about Propeller solutions not Steel Developments.

That's you told!

+1 Martini and after chasing got sent a completely different prop had to send him a picture of the original. He did however waive the carriage costs

I find it hard keeping track of 14,449 specific prejudices. I apologise, it wasn't the woman at Steel Developments, it was women in Any Manly Activity Company...

Re - ratios, that was the info from Barrus??

Re Propeller Solutions - I can only comment on what I experienced. He seemed very busy with a lot of props being worked and waiting. Most of his work seems to come from Greece and Australia.

This is his website Powertech stainless steel and aluminium propellers from Propeller Solutions

I have just double checked and you're right, the old 4.8inch box is 1.75 too, so no change in ratio. Only other difference is the 1.25 inch propshaft requiring a racing solid hub system meaning meaning that if you hit anything in the water or the bottom then the whole engine is probably toast as the shock loading will be transmitted throughout the engine rather than absorbed by a rubber hub melting.

I'm sure I remember a conversation that didn't involve me regarding the lady at SD and her attitude/telephone manner.

So you may not be completely losing the plotter just yet...

The output shaft seems to be the same diameter too! We have the same props and the rubber hub protecting the gearbox/engine.

Props back on tomorrow and hoping for a quick blast through the harbour to check it at WOT. Not for fun you understand, cause the Parker is just no fun at those speeds

Just a quick foot note to this thread.

Prior to the props being tweeked, the engines would rev to 5700 at WOT, hit 41kts and feel sluggish (for the Parker) when hitting the power.
Took them to Propeller Soultions and asked for 6100.
Had a quick sea trial on Sunday (bloody cold) and the result was spot on 6100, in excess of 45kts and more importantly, that great shove in the back on hitting the throttles. A very happy man and a great service
