Problems with my Mercury f90

My Ribcraft 5.85 / Mercury f90 combo has given the family 5 seasons of wonderful rib-bing, in the Solent, to the beach and back, wakeboarding etc. and has now moved to Cornwall. Sadly, the engine has now been declared scrap owing to corrosion in the power head, possibly attributable to a metal gasket between the Mercury leg and the Yamaha - sourced powerhead. Metal between the oil and water channels is now below 1/16 in. - anyone else had this problem with this motor? (it is a 2000 model - dead after 7 seasons, in spite of regular flushing out with fresh etc.....
Looks as if I shall have to buy the Yam f100 I originally dreamed of, after all - anyone know of any 'cheap' ones out there?

Oh! Dear. It's the same age/type of engine as mine. No problems yet. I'm going to bury my head in the sand until the end of the season. Looks as though I'd better have a closer look then.

How did you find out about this?

There's a guy on ebay doing cheap US import Soozook 4-strokes. DF150 was around £6750 - I doubt you'd get a Yam F100 for that money.

Blimey he has a 175 for less than £5k
Anybody got any tips on how to buy these engines without getting scammed - i notice he wants £500 by PayPal then the rest bank transfered - like im going to do that

But seriously

1. Do you think this offer is genuine

2 Any ideas how much to have them shipped - vat import duty etc

3. Would warranty be valid over here

4. Will my brother in law be convinced when i tell him he should buy a twin 175 hp rib as a first boat

The first sign was an engine overheat alarm at sustained WOT (over 5 minutes) - this was diagnosed as being the 'grommet' between the leg and the powerhead blocked with crud. In dismantling the engine to access the grommet the engineer came across the advanced corrosion and said it was not even worth going any further. Furthermore, it appears that the gasket between the leg and the Mercury / Yamaha adaptor plate was originally supplied in metal, but subsequently changed to a fibre one as the metal caused accelerated corrosion !!! - Guess which one I had!! - it may be worth your finding out more about this, as changing a gasket is a whole lot cheaper than what I am having to contemplate.

That DF150 in your link is in USA. The one I mentioned is UK based:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SUZUKI-150...d=p3911.c0.m14

He also has smaller ones, like this DF90 for £5750, if 150hp is too much for you:

Talk to Ribcraft, they have boxed new 2006 model DF90 XL's at about £4500 complete in box with all rigging kit right down to the prop.
The 5 year warranty aplies from the purchase date so as long as you don't mind paying several grand more for the same engine with the same warranty but dated a year or so later...........

Don't think an XL would suit this boat

Many thanks for that. I certainly will have a good look at the end of the season, got to take the gearbox off then anyway. Knowing my luck...

That's a seriously good price - comes with all the rigging too, which Yamaha used to charge extra for

Ribcraft's Soozooks are cheap too, but not much call for XL 90s, which may explain why they have 2 year old unused motors in stock.
