Parsuns Outboards. Are they worth the money?

hi guys.
Anybody have any up to date experience with the parsuns outboards? im thinking about buying a new 9.8 standard shaft to replace my mariner 25hp 2 stroke as its way to big and costly to run

Now ive heard good and bad things about the Parsuns. Ive done a search on here and they seem to be the marmite of outboards.

I like the idea of having a 3 year warranty brand new outboard but if they crap then theres really no point...

Why a Parsun? Why not just go for the reliable, classic makes such as yamaha, suzuki, mariner, mercury, tohatsu, honda etc etc?

Spend a bit more and get a good brand, or a nearly new used engine. Most of those above will come with a 5 year warranty aswell.

Aside from quality and reliability issues, resale value is low. You'll regret it.

As above, I always feel be it boat or engine, what you gain at purchase £'s wise you lose come resale. Factor in pride of ownership etc and the old adage about the 'price being forgotten long after the quality remains' is something to bear in mind. This is all a bit of a generalisation of course and certainly doesn't apply to all branded consumer goods but I'd always rather have a well looked after second hand quality product than a cheaper bargain basement clone. Buy well and you will not lose money anyway.

Certainly over the last few years sinking money into decent branded small popular 2 strokes is better than money in the bank...

i`m looking for a 20-25 hp at the moment ,are they much heavier and thirsty than a 15 ?

i cant believe you find a 25 too big and too thirsty on a 3.8! i had a 25merc on a 3.6 and found it to be great on fuel, perfectly useable at low speeds and had the power to get on the plane and have fun when loaded up - i would never have gone for a smaller engine!

Thanks guys mind made up will be leaving the parsuns alone for this purchase.

Festinghouse my 25 is 50kg give or take a kilo and lifting it out the car and van is killing me. I launch off beaches alot and the weight on the back makes for a very tiring return up the beach. SOOO im trying to shave off a few kilos where I can plus I want a 4 stroke smaller engine as its cheaper to run

A 4 stroke 15hp isn't going to be much lighter than a 25hp 2 stroke...just sayin'

I think you will miss the power to be honest. A 9.8 isn't going to give you much performance wise. I don't know how you find the the 25hp not very economical, I get 3 whole day fishing trips out of mine from a 25 liter tank

Oh I will miss the power for sure. My 25 turns my bombard into a rocket but its time to downsize to something thats easier to handle up and down the beaches.

why not go for a nice 9.8 2 stroke tohatsu, lovely little engine and very light.

You need a last generation Yam or Mariner 15 hp 2 stroke at 36 kg. As much as I love the Twat 9.8 I don't think it will do your 380 justice.

Would like a 4 stroke this time round. Nice and quiet easy on fuel. Ive had 2 strokes for the last 6 years and DAMN are they noisy plus the premixing csn be a pain.

My 4stroke 6hp Merc is 27kg. If you step up to 8 or 9.9hp you're talking 36kg.

I have a late Yam 15hp 2st on my Bombard 3.8 and it goes very well, sips fuel very quiet and only weighs in at 36kg
OK I have to mix fuel but the yam oil comes with a very easy to use measure to add mixing.

Hi Big Scott,'

Are you currently using a good set of launching wheels (with high volume balloon tires)? If not that should be your first investment before making any decisions about changing the outboard. With launching wheels, you would only need to transfer the outboard from your car to the transom of your assembled boat (which you would have situated right beside your car. Then let the wheels do all of the work as you walk your boat from your parked car to the launch.

I don't think you will save an ounce of fuel by downgrading from a 25hp to a 9.9 hp because with the the 9.9 hp, you will be constantly at WOT and still never get out of displacement speeds on to plane.

I too wonder if the smaller 4 stroke will be man enough ?, I would want to try one on the bombard before parting with any cash.

Yep big launch wheels which are far better than th original wheels supplies which resembled aircraft wheels. Would be good to get hold of an outboard to test out the power behind which I should be able to sort out. Theres a 8hp 4stroke mariner bought new in 2008 up for sale locally for 800 quid which s very tempting
