Anyone out there that hasnt checked the oil in the intermediate bearing housing lately, my advice is DO IT NOW!!! Just had a big repair bill because the bearings had been running dry for ages by the looks of them and had fallen apart inside the housing mangling the shaft and making a real mess! :

Unlucky. Unfortunately that bearing housing seems to get forgotten, and it willl run dry for a while before giving any audible symptoms. One problem is they are tucked away out of sight. Mind you, if you dont check the oil level in the sterndrive gearbox you will get a bigger bill!

Anyone out there know where you can get sternpowr parts from that are cheaper than lancing? Even the most basic parts seem to cost the earth!

DT125,

I have a supply of cheap factory recon upper & lower units - complete. As for bearings , seals, u/j etc, these can be sourced from any bearing supplier at a fraction of the cost. PM me if you want any specific details. Certainly all of the seals & bearings for the bearing housing can be bought for approx 100 from our normal bearing supplier.

Neville,
Thanks for that, unfortunately ive already shelled out for the genuine parts, wish id come across you guys a few weeks ago! Will certainly drop you a line first next time. One thing im a bit concerned about is that theres quite a bit of left/right play in the leg when you move it, i think the aluminium blocks are a bit worn as well as the plastic shims that are either side of the steering cylinder, new blocks are 75 each!!! How much play is acceptable before i have to get new ones?

For JK, Jelly has done a PDF copy of the owners manual. Its 2.57 mb can you publish it on Ribnet somewhere ?

I have e mailed Halmatic last week but heard nothing from them ref copyright so I am asuming that having given them 7 days to reply they aren't really interested, afterall it is a 1981 document.

Ian, how about next years Ribex ? should give Seb a half decent deadline

Pete
