Pacific 22 new proud owner

Just bought my new project Pacific 22.It has no engine or leg.To be ohnest i thought i may be able to convert to take outboards.I havent gone into any details realley as yet but two people have said this is not practicle .so the way forward will be the best Deisel inboard set up i can buy or put together.I am very handy mechanically and at adapting things i.e fabricating.I would prefer to build some up myself rather than buy ready done unless of course something was in very good order and at a reasonable fair price.I have had no experience with boats with inboards so any suggestions will help.1.How much would i have to pay for a good secondhand leg and what is a good engine to get that does smoke much or smell of deisel fumes. So if anyone has any good ideas please help.thankyou

Have a chat with JBT, (Riva on here) and see if they still have some spare drives. I suspect that the easiest drive will be to put a Sternpowr 103 back on rather than mess about converting the transom.

There is one Pacific with a John Deere 110 hp in it. Del Connolley re-engined it back in 96 time and said that although it had less hp that a standard rib it was quicker, so may be worth looking around for an alternative if you don't wont smoke. Mermaid are also very helpful and always seem to have a workshop full of various engines being rebuilt, well worth a chat with them or even a visit if your down Poole way.

Oh and don't forget some photos of the rebuild.

Hi Peter,Thanks for that.I have wanted one for years.I may not think that when i see the one i,ve bought i understand its in a pritty sad state.Will see it today.You may have already seen it its the one left at JBT marine.I,m optimistic that this was a wise buy as money is hard to come buy these days.My thoughts are that buying something that is up and running at a fair price say seven thousand i would probable change this and that if i bought badly or engine was tired it would need rebuild costing money then perhaps work to the leg agaain cost .So buy a shell, only do things onces(with the advice from others)At the end i will have a boat i know insice out can maintain my self the money saved at time of purchase can be spent to fit out and not just to repair worn things.What alternative smoke free deisels are there.I have to be practicle with costs and also consider that i dont want to de value the boat.

PeterR, I don't know your budget but I'd be tempted to fit a modern package; maybe a Volvo D4 or something similar. Sort the transom and hull, fit the engine, make a good sound and watertight engine box and you'd be set for reliable boating. No niggles at the back of your mind about the equipment.

At that price I would take it but also see if they have any other bits like trim and tilt pump, steering helm etc which would save a few bob.

Whilst JWs suggestion would give peace of mind, a standard Pacific has a mid mounted engine with gearbox and then jack shaft to the transom. There was one P22 in Cowes with a stern drive but it upset the balance at rest, filled with water and sank. Keeping to mid mounted engines will ensure the deck remains above the water line, so if it rains the water just runs out the scuppers. A Waterproof engine box is a good idea, there was a red one in Lyminton with a one piece engine box in GRP and very smart it looked too, but I don't know who has the moulds for the engine box.

If its a complete shambles then deffinately take the deck up adn put a bigger fuel tank in. 80 litres is way to small and 170 litre tank an easy swop. At the risk of Nasher and Hightower groaning "not again" here is the link http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?...acific+console

Volvo certainly produce a jackshaft kit. The shaft is not included in the kit so you position the engine and drive and a shaft is made to suit.

I seem to remember the gent from Barrus who post's on here said they had made a re engining kit for the Mk1 Pac using a yanmar engine.

I could however make my own thread on the delights of fitting my own Ocean Console, complete with divided sections in the bottom, covered with a false floor with little rails on the edges of the flat stuff to stop the cuppa or wooly hat and sunglasses falling off......Should I go on

Peter I sent you a message regarding power legs. I have many used Stern Powr legs with the transom housing all hoses and lift and steering cylinders.

Looks like a great project you've got there Peter.

I'm guessing the boat is down in Emsworth (JBT) at the moment? Not sure how you are planning on getting it back to Colchester but if you're not going to tow it yourself, try these guys:
