outch! DT65

dear ribnet,
i am sad.
i broke my beloved DT65 yesterday.
i think it was either because i hit a rock or because i installed a too different prop afterwards.

after no real problems for about 20 minutes in low speed the engine lost power instantly at full throttle after about 2 minutes.

anyways - now the crankcase is broken. and probably more. the engine is still running 'half' but the damage is severe.

here comes my real problem:
looking up the part list at browns point i identified the engine as a 1990.
did i read the numbers correct?

i was hoping to find a complete engine head to buy but can't find a proper assembly.

i identified the ideal part as a the:
11300-94734-0ED Cylinder/Crankcase Assembly (NLA)
to be the part number i need, but it is discontinued.
did i read the numbers correct?

the only offers i then found on the net were:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/SUZUKI-OUTBOA...ht_1416wt_1099

and

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-Cylin...ht_5280wt_1314

are these parts any helpful for my engine?

does anyone have a suggestion what to do now...?

and no - buying a new engine is not an option unfortunately...

thank you for your help guys!

Sorry to hear that.

You mention that you recently changed the propeller, or possibly hit something? You'd know if you'd hit something as the skeg and propeller will be damaged. If it was fitted with a stainless-steel propeller, and you've struck something, then there's a fair chance you will have stripped the gearbox too.

Back to the propeller - was it the right pitch and size? Assuming you didn't strike anything underwater, the engine may have over-revved especially at full throttle. Any indication on the tacho when you were running at WOT?

Another thought is the auto-lube (assuming your engine has it fitted) was faulty, and the engine has seized at WOT. In which case if you do replace the head, then disconnect the auto-lube and go for pre-mix to be on the safe side.

Regards changing the crankcase, you're going to need gaskets too. Whole thing could get very expensive.

Had a quick look on sites here for DT65 parts. There's someone in Blargowrie, Perthshire selling parts (circa 1997), so may be compatible. Could be another member lives local that could check it out and you can do a deal. Just a thought anyway. Hope you get it sorted and good luck.

The serial number confirms 1990. As Sparty says, a rebuild will cost a lit of money, probably better to find a replacement motor and sell the dt65 for spares. :-(

If you want to go down the rebuild route, then Ardoran Marine in Oban, Scotland, may have some used parts or a powerhead. The owner is Colin Robertson - helpful chap.

thank you guys!
i will try scottland on monday.
i definetily want to rebuild.

the wrong prop was a lot more powerful in low speed. but didnt reach full speed.
i didnt know that a wrong prop could possibly kill an engine. shame.

the autolube was fine i think.

the gearbox could well be the initial reason for it too

once i get my hands on the discontinued parts i will dismount my baby and see if gearbox is affected.

so for now the main bottleneck is an "as complete as possible crank assembly + gaskets", etc.

i hope 1.500 in parts will not be exceeded.

i never found the section in rib.net where engines are sold. or there are just not so many offered.
on ebay you rarely see used engines i find.

i would love a small chassy like the 65 or 75 for my searider 5.4. which i mainly ride alone or with one passenger only.

thank you guys!

There's a Suzuki DT65 being sold on Ebay.de just now (I think for parts): Suzuki DT 65 | eBay

Also one here in Kent... how much!

thank you spartacus,
dunno why i am too blind to find these myself. silly question: how did you find these? what did you search for?

the ine in germany is a 1997 and and meant as spare parts source. yet if i understand the parts library correct then the case might not fit my 1990.
correct?

the one in kent is nice - 1.750!??

thank you!

You were overpropped & the engine was lugging. This causes stress in the engine at all speeds. You should always prop to reach Max WOT RPM

Sorry, no idea. You need to see what the manufacturing date-run was for your particular model. The part number is crucial, so check with a main dealer to see if they can shed any light on it. Not sure what the Suzuki dealer network is like in Germany for information?

Could be, I'd read it as he wasn't reaching full RPM, either way it's not well

Could be. I read it as he'd revved the shaft off it and bollocksed it.

I was in a similiar position as you last year with my DT55. Sold it as spares or repairs and bought a Mariner 75. I would not throw good money after bad. For £1500 you will get something way better than the DT65. Its always a roll of the dice buying used outboards but you could spend a grand on the DT and something else will likely go. Only worth working on if you can source a cheap donner engine (mt old 55 would have been perfect!) gaskets are prohibitively expensive on these engines.

thanks

thank you guys, i took the dt65 in Kent in the end. i am already driving to pick it up.
i hope i am going to be lucky and the tilt unit is the same - this would then be the easiest de-/re-connect i suppose.

do you have any advise on how to interchange two DT65s with the smallest hassle? where to disconnect?

Too late now but I took the alternative theory whren my Merc died - I reckoned a total rebuild and I have an engine of known history.

Probably easiest to just unbolt the whole thing from the transom - that also means you can check the bolt holes for water ingress & re-seal them.

Might also be worth checking with the SR4 crew what sort of pitch prop they use - I would guess somewhere between 12-14" for a 65Hp on an SR5.4.
