Have you spoken to the vendor on a LANDLINE, contact a local business who know them or even spoken to their local policeman ?
Be extremely cautious, I nearly got caught. If they're genuine they really won't mind and will understand given where they live. Loads of scams use the Scottish islands....

as said above lots of scams use shetland and orkney, buyer beware and all that.
there are members of this board who live there , perhaps a pm to them to see if they could verify seller before parting with cash.

Yep - they also use Orkney for scams too. Usually a picture gives it away, when it looks like Home Counties suburbia!

Delivery is quite possible as the Northern Isles have several freight forwarders and I'm happy to advise.

However, I'm 70% it will be a scam - do you want to share me the ad and I'll have a quick look for you.

Or else say you have me as friend from Orkney who is coming up and will look at it on your behalf. That usually flushes out the fakes.

And to be honest, selling items from Orkney / Shetland on mainland UK would often be less profitable, due to transport costs and local demand for boat stuff.

Usually folk here will buy from south to get better value, as more choice / competition, rather than sell to it.

Hi there - that's not Shetland unless I'm very much mistaken. Yep the house type and the wooden fence give it away. Was this on Boats and Outbards? I've reported a few and they seem good at taking them down.

Just in case, I'd call his bluff.

Annoys me that they can seem to get us a bad name.

That's not actually true...

Eg: lerwick - Google Maps

Though - IMHO - they do have a very different feel to ones south - without descending into stereotypes - as does housing in general.

Lots of our rubbish goes to Lerwick to be burnt to heat homes in the town - buried heating pipes in the street - like a huge central heating system

reasonable delivery from shetland ! that would have me worried for a start! we sell engine up there and it costs a fortune unless it is v small and if it is then whats the point.

having said that the engines up there tend to be v well looked after as they are often out on their own with no other boats for miles.

so see if you can speak to them and pay by pay pal.

Easiest way would have been to check his address on Google street view - if it matches up to the photos of the engine then it must be genuine

Anyone selling anything in Shetland will put it on the local classifieds site Shetlink first and this would find a local buyer first to avoid any hassle shipping it south. Not seen this before as I'm always checking out the site. If you can't get an address then forget it. If you can I would be happy to verify it but as a bit of a novice I wouldn't know a good engine from a duffer. (Why I bought new you see).

Cheers

Its quite funny, the scammers seem to to deliberatly pick remote places in Scotland to "sell" their items.

Only last month i reported two items to Ebay as dodgy, both large Kubota zero turn mowers which interested me.

One was aparently in Wick and a week later another was being sold from Thurso .

Both times i lied and said that i was working out of Peterhead and would be willing to come and view the machines to which i got the same bulls**t answer of "errm i'm actually away on business at the moment but trust me, the machine is genuine"

Yeah OK, i'll just send you the full amount in cash then come and collect later on then.....

Fecking scammers.....Is it just me or does there seem to be more and more recently?

Simon

That ain't Unst! If anyone has anything they see up here I'll quite happily go look for you, but as mentioned pretty much everything goes on Shetlink first to try to find a buyer in these islands and most people go south for big purchases. Shipping costs a small fortune from the isles.
