optimax control

did mercury do a left and right handed surface mount throttle. Also do the optimax controls not have a lock to prevent moving from fwd through neutral to reverse etc. Drove a left handed throttle other day that had trim switch on wrong side ie left of on lever and no lock between gears.

Is it knackered or is that the way they are?

Fly by wire is only available on the Verado - "neutral locks" seem to be dying out generally.

But the Mercury standard and recessed side mounts come with a neutral lock, as do some after-market top-mounts.
It seems daft (and unsafe) that the Merc top-mounts don't have a neutral lock.

I found not having a neutral lock odd when i bought my current boat after being used to having it on previous boats. When I helm boats now that have neutral lock I find it a bit of a faff. Especially when manoevering in tight spots. I am nervous however, to let the kids and Missus drive the thing as I'm afraid they'll slip through neutral and bang it in reverse.
