Old petrol?

Hi,

I have some 50:1 mix that has been hanging around since September last year. Questions, questions...

1) Do I 100%, absolutely, definitely, positively have to discard it? The engine has just had new pistons, rings, etc.

2) Does anybody want it?!

3) Has anyone ever damaged the catalytic converter in a car by burning pre-mix?

Why not just use it in the boat? Its only six months old....

If you're a bit dubious top up the tank with as much fresh fuel as will fit! I do the same every winter, the boat is laid up from October to March and not had a problem so far...

Mix with similar volumes of fresh (if you're concerned). It will be fine.

Yes, that petrol will be fine, As stated, just top it up with fresh!

I used to leave petrol for 12 months without worrying about it. No fuel in the carb though...

People started to suck air through their teeth and tell me that unleaded petrol forms viscous 'strings' when left.

When my engine went bang the coxswain of the lifeboat pulled a face when I said the fuel was six weeks old.

Back to my blissful ignorance then, plus a splash of new stuff.

I was once told that the British Army gave unleaded a 6 week shelf life and leaded 6 months.

I put mine away halfish full, slop a drop of stabilizer in and top it up with fresh before new season first use.

In the navy we used to fill the petrol cans before we deployed and they would pretty much stay like that for the duration of a 6/7/8/9 month deployment. They were only there for the Gemini OB as the Pac 22/24s were diesel. I'm not sure how long it ultimately stayed in the cans for, but it was certainly there for a full deployment.
