Old merc needs dating

The merc that is on the searider I bought is a clamshell (?) with a multi coloured band. Any advice where I can get the info for aprox date? I know it's old but just how old would be interesting to know.
Cheers

Is it Four cylinder or Three cylinder? Do you know the serial No. It should be on the swivel plate.

Since I got it I've only had the cover off a few times. I'll get my backside in gear tomorrow and get the numbers. It's a 3 cylinder.

If you email Mercury they should be able to help you. This is what I did, but unfortunately their records are not particularly accurate for the 1980s.
