One dealer I spoke with, who sells Merc, Etec and Yamaha basically said that they had had great results with both the Etecs and the Yamahas. (He was slightly less "glowing" about the Mercs, although loved the Verados... Just not ideal for me...

In the end, I would have happily taken either an Etec or Yamaha, and as it turned out there was a bit of a unique deal available on the Yamaha so I grabbed it. There is a lot I like about the Etecs though, no doubt about it, and didn't meant to sound like I felt there was something wrong with them. I hope I don't miss the 2-stroke punch!

Will do PT... a new truck (colour co-ordinated with the Rib of course, and a new engine... same old boat though!)

Bwaaa.... I've been Voodoo'd by the best of them, so pin away!

To be honest, I was really keen on the Etec, and I still like it a lot, but with this deal, the Yamaha ended up being about $4000 less than the Etec, and that was hard to ignore! (The fact that the guy is a pretty good friend helps too...!)

What's with the pins? I've wrapped it in a big Annual Service Bill! Good Luck with the new kit, even so!

That's an interesting mix, does she have one of these anywhere?

LOL... It is indeed. It would make a good tatoo for her. At least I don't generally need to wonder what's on her mind, unlike the first Mrs. Stoo.

For example, she recently expressed her enthusiasm for this new motor, even at the expense of replacing her 8 year old car! (I suggested she look for a job closer to the water so she could boat to work!)

I finally had a chance to get the boat out for a proper run with the new engine. With two people and two dogs, and about 100 litres of fuel, we managed 48 mph @5500. Very smooth, although I don't know it's any more quiet than the 2-stroke when it's cranked up. The sound reminds me more of an I/O I used to run for a charter boat... more like a truck!

I am going to change props tomorrow to compare, as the one I have on now seems a little sluggish at take-off, but that might just be the 4-stroke.

Based on a 35 mile run, certainly fuel consumption is much better... Even running a lot at much higher speed than normal, I was burning at least 40% less fuel than I typically did with the old engine!
