oil everywhere inside the cowling

Have a Yamaha 20HP and refilled the oil level on the 2-stroke tank (for the autolube pump) to the Max level today before going out. Had a fun day with some reasonable waves but nothing excessive. Didn't notice anything strange in terms of performance, not oil pissing everywhere which I would have noticed as was tilting the engine for beaching etc.

When I got home tonight (reasonable roads, minor bumps and twists, but not 4x4 stuff) there was oil everywhere - streaming down the outside of the engine - leaking out the cowl. Removed the cowl and the ccap was no longer on the oil tank. The most likely reason is that I got distracted when filling the oil as the ranger was taking my details for launching and I never refitted the cap - but is it possible that it "blew itself out" (it is a bung type rather than a screw cap) and if so has something mechanical caused this - any suggestions? e.g. just the heat today

Assuming the most likely reason (my stupidity) then I have wiped up all the obvious excess oil - but is there anything I want to be particularly careful to get spotless. I am assuming most things will actually be protected by a thin layer of oil.

unlikely to have blown out as the tank is not pressurised and is vented anyway. I have left the cap off in the past and when I tilted the motor up for recovery the oil came pouring out of the tank when the engine was fully raised. hope this helps.
