Not going into gear

Hi,

I have a yammy 115 4 stroke and this weekend I popped the boat in the water, started up fine. Cast lines and pop it in gear, nothing. Luckily I floated back to the slipway.

When I engage forward or reverse it won't go into gear. The engine management flashed code 28 - incorrect shift position.

I am not mechanically minded, while I try and find someone to take a look, can anyone recommend anything I can do or check myself.

Cheers, Andy

Have you just had it serviced?
I did mine earlier this year and managed not to put the gear shift back in place , had to put it back on the trailer and drop the gear box put gear select back in place and back in the water sorted!

With the engine off, put it in gear, forward or reverse, does the prop turn? Does it turn out of gear? That should tell you if it is going into gear. You should feel the cable engaging and the gear box clicking as you put it in gear too, again with the engine off.

Thanks all, hopefully fixed it. On closer inspection the two arms had come apart, although the prop will spin when in gear and when not with the engine off.

Hoping this has fixed it. Testing tomorrow.

Prop shouldn't spin in gear, either forward or reverse (unless you crank hard enough to turn the motor over.)

Something's still wrong, I think.

Do you have flush muffs? With cooling water from a hose, you can fire the motor up and (after making sure everything's clear of the prop) gently try fwd and rev while idling.

Cheers for all the advice, on closer inspection most of the linkages had been undone from some thieving 'bleeps'

I had a suspicion the engine had been tampered with.

Anyone know of any good burglar disabling devices, and I mean disabling literally!!

How did the testing go?
Will it be ok for Cherbourg this weekend do you think?

Hi Trev,

I took it for a test run last night and all seems ok, and had an engineer look over it and he said it was fine now.

Fingers crossed it is good to go for the weekend.

Andy

Mossberg

Of course there are plenty of available thief disabling devices, that are semi-automatic

I have a video surveillance system that does an excellent job of keeping people away. The "Smile You Are On Camera" signs pretty much stopped traffic driving down our private driveway, for which the "No Trespassing" signs did almost nothing as they were ignored. Security lights that come on with movement and cameras in sight will stop all but the determined.

^ I like the idea!

"Make sure that the trip wire is high enough not to be triggered by household pets, wild animals or stray animals."

The deer would set it off at my house a few times a day no matter what height you set it at to be triggered by humans.

A few motorcycle owners I know from other forums have them. Sadly they fit them after theft, rather than before.
