Hi,

I have been told that Yam have "temporarily discontinued" the V Max 200 HPDI... i've been told its due to emissions... ect ect

How hard do you intend to drive? I would reckon that for most leisure users, they will be a good engine, but drive hard and they break. One was raced season before last, and the saddle cracked and the steering tube sheared not once but a couple of times. Under race conditions, though! Prop selection may be difficult as well and you may need to speak to a specialist like Propeller Revolutions in Poole as I've meard many mutterings that Evinrude props leave much to be desired.

Richard,

I know several people who are or racing or drive their rib very hard with E-Tec's. 2 out of 5 had problems with the saddle. But my gut feeling is this would also have happened with a yamaha or regular optimax engine as they are being driven really hard. The other people I know with an E-Tec and who drive it the "normal" way, had so far no problems.

As far as the props go, I heard nothing but good things about those in terms of performance and acceleration. It was with the evinrude prop we reached the best top performances (we tested more or less 7 different props). The only weak part of the props is the rubber ring inside the prop. When the engine is mounted very high or on a hydraulic lift, and you go flat out for a long time, there is a risk that the rubber ring heats up too much... (but this is often in extreme conditions).

Paul

Dead right there, Richard - particularly with the bushes failing.

If it was in the UK it would have been a 200 not a 225 although that may have been the same saddle etc - they seem to have sorted out the problems now though (I think I know the one you're talking about?) - If anyone wants to know how to make them harder to break I can ask for you?

I have the E. Tec. 225 not the HO version with a Viper prop on the back of a 7.3 mtr. Rib and it flys just out of curiosity why is it that you want the HO. E Tec.

Not by me you won't I really dont know enough about them but I know a man that does because he fitted my engine Geds engine and Ribster Rache engine if you phone Ian at Liverpool Power Boats he will tell you all there is to know about them top top bloke
The reason for mentioning the normal 225 is really a reflection of your dislike of the stars and stripes colour scheme but one thing I can tell you is if you buy an E Tec I doubt you will be dissapointed good luck

Why not the E-tec 250 instead of the E-tec 225 HO? Same horsepower, same money.

Other gearcase and low water puckup. It should allow you to gain 1 or 2 kn.

Ditto.

I now use a 21" 4-bladed Mercury Revolution. Almost 48 knots (55 mph) just 2 weeks ago AND I keep it in the water!

OK Charles, I know that this is slow by your standards!

Chris.

225 ho is high output [engine factory tuned] with more streamline gear box ,higher water pick up for high speeds.

Shouldn't this be a lower water pick up?

Does the slimmer gearbox mean less "chunky" gears and that it could perhaps be more likely to "break" if the prop hits something? If so, is this a trade off (for an extra knot or two) that is worth accepting?

Also, does it come in long/extra long shaft or is this not an issue?

... just some thoughts.

Chris.

correct ,lower pick up.....sorry not all together there from night be for

rule of thumb :- ho's are for performance ribs and bass boats, have a different ratio gearbox, are lighter and are for single instalation. so if you have the need for speed the ho is for you.

the 250 etcs are for driving heaver boats, diving ,crusing ribs,ect.....

All of the HO's are reputed to have 10% extra power - the reason being that in the US fishing competitions you are allowed a 10% tolerance on horsepower (as you are in British RIB racing!) so Evinrude make a 200 that puts out at least 220. The gearbox won't be any weaker than a standard one, but the lower water pickup allows you to run the engine higher on the transom giving a higher top speed - more usefull if you have an engine lifter or jack.

All of the above will gain probably 5 - 10 mph depending on setup, but lifters require extra maintenance (and something else to go wrong!) and if you raise the engine too high there is a risk of starving the engine of water - hope that answers some questions!
