New Outboard

As in my previous thread, ive got a flatacraft force 4 RIB, that im wanting to get ready for use in the following months.

The engine that came with the boat (mercury 40hp), has never went since I got the boat, so im planning to buy a replacement.

Does anyone know any good places in Scotland to pick up a second hand 40hp or above outboard?

I've heard of companies that sell on ex - RNLI and ex-Army or Nay outboards, but cant find anywhere?

Anybody have contact details for any of these companies?

Hi There

I'm not sure that buying an engine of the navy or the army is a good idea. I have seen them driving these boats in poole. Thrashing them to death sprins to mind. Do you have a certain budget for an engine ie do you need a second hand one or can you stretch to a new one.

Have a look on http://www.ebay.co.uk and search for outboards.

There are a few on there some are not worth looking at but you often get a good one cheap.

Also on e-bay under the boat section you can pick up a few bargins.

Barrus in Bicester (the merc / mariner importers) do the reconditioned RNLI / MOD contract engines.

I hve no reason to doubt that they are in tip top order after a refurb and they g'tee the work.

The one's i used were fine.

shouldnt think there will be anything wrong with buying one off the rnli, they will have looked after it better than a private individual probably

Hi Gadgey,

FYM (Forth Yacht Marina) in Grangemouth. They also used to have a link with Clyde Chandlers in Glasgow but I've not visited there. They stock ex RNLI engines and they are normally very good. You can choose you model if they've got a few in stock. Some of these engines have been backup motors and they've never seen the sea. I've had 3 30hp Mariners and they've all been good. One was brand new. Look for the ones which have NOT been painted up. Look for tell tail signs of paint on top of the grease to recognise these. I've a pal who had a 40hp and it was good too. They give you a warranty. Telephone: 01324 665071. If you are over on the east, their place is worth a visit. They let you wander around and it's always good to see the way others do it - Ribs, cruisers and work boats. Let me know how you get on.

Try a word with Yampower in Glasgow. They've a limited stock of s/h o/bs but anyone I know that's bought one hasn't had a problem.
