Since my most recent post - i have chartered an identical Axopar 28 AC to my own with a 300 V8 Mercury engine for the last two weeks of July in the Stockholm archipelago.

What could be a better way of seeing what the differences are.

More in early August when we return

Yes great boats from same design team.

XO are heavier, so can't be towed and the layouts didn't suit us so well

More expensive too

As it turns out, that boat was sold as we left Hamburg on the 1,500 mile drive to Stockholm. So we were lent a twin engine boat with the new V6 200s.

Perfectly ok and good for 47 knots, but drank a lot more fuel than the single 300 G2 we have at home.

Flat out - 148 litres an hour at 47 knots. vs 94 Litres an hour at 42 Knots.

Much closer at 35 knots - 80 litres an hour vs 65 Litres

So we never tried the new V8 300

try Axopar Owners group on Facebook for more info.

That was all last year - 2019. What would you like to know for 2020 that could help you?

Yes it seems like that, but I read it that the message was written in November 2019 talking about August, so that would be August 2020, but I must be confused.

I'm looking at a rib, undecided which brand, but around the 7.5m with as much HP on the back as the insurance bods will allow me, so I'm looking at around 225hp to 300hp and choosing between 2 & 4 Stroke - Evinrude G2 and the Mercury (although I'm still a little confused about the 2stroke 4 stroke Mercuries)

The Rob brands considered so far are Grand G750 Gold although the G850 can have 350hp , Brig 670m and possibly but doubtfully the 8m, and the vipermax 7.3 or 8m.

Any comments/suggestions n the above would be warmly welcomed.

Thank you
Graham

7.5-8m with a 225 would be OK performance wise - 300hp would be MUCH better

You have plenty of work to do.

Have you talked to dealers of these two brands?
Mercury no longer make two strikes
Evinrude are the only two stroke maker

Good luck

Thanks Atoll

That's cleared the confusion up with Mercury 😀.

I've spoken to a couple of dealers, but, as with some of the people on here, there's a lot of flag waving going on, i.e. What I use is the best! And does seem to be a lot of objective advice around.

So all in need to think about is:

Warranty
Fuel flow
Noise
Torque
Emissions
Price
Weight - it seems like they're pretty similar now?
Reliability - I understand that they're both reliable so doesn't seem an issue.
Service cost vs oil usage - I don't think this is a issue, it could be £100 or so different per year.

A nice comparison spreadsheet between all the engines on the market would be pleasant!😁 But I'm starting to think that it doesn't really make much difference with the engines, but the rib manufactures on the other hand seem to vary quite a bit.
