New here and in need of alot of help

Hi there... great site I have discovered here (even though I was sad to see that Portugal doesn't exist on the "where are you" part of the resgistration). Hope someone can help

I am about to buy a 5m RIB (make is barcoeste check it out at www.barcoeste.pt) and had decided on a NEW 4 stroke 50hp HONDA outboard. Now I get people telling me that Imay not have enough power or speed. I can get a NEW 2 stroke 70hp Tohatsu for the same price, and I really don't know what to choose. The boat is mainly to use at sea, go fishing, cruise around, do some scuba diving and some water skiing too (even though I know RIBS arent the best boats for skiing). The boat can take up to 8 people bur there'll usually be about 4 or 5 onboard. How fast will each of the engines go with 4 or 5 onboard ? Is there a big difference? Can anyone tell me the average fuel consumption of either motor?
Any comments? Any and all kinds of help will be appreciated, I have to decide soon or I wont get the RIB in time for the lovely hot weather that has begun

Go for the 70hp, particularly given you'll be carrying that many people. My friend's got a 4.7m Avon RIB with a Honda 50 which is used for fisheries work in Scotland. He likes the engine but with three people on board he says it struggles a bit, so if you want to ski on a 5m RIB as well then you'll definitely be disappointed with a 50. The 2-stroke will have inherently better acceleration than a 4-stroke, but will be noisier of course. Have you looked at the Yamaha 70 2-stroke, which is a very well proven engine and at 107kgs has the best power to weight ratio in its class?

..........go for the 70hp. I have friends with 50's (2 & 4 stroke) and all wish they had something larger especially given they use their RIBS as you plan too. If you can afford it, go for a 4 stroke as they are nice and quiet and very fuel efficiant. That said one can use a very rough rule of thumb that you'll get 1 mile to every litre. But it this really an issue ? Think about where and when you'll be doing most of your boating and I'm sure fuel will not be too big an issue.

I have had the Yam 70 Phil mentiones and would advise it's a superb engine, I'd have another tomorrow ! Mine was on a 4.8 Zodiac Medline, a rather heavy craft however, the 70 did everything required including pulling out an 18 stone wakeboarder.

Go for the 70! My guess would be with 5 on board a 50 would struggle onto the plane. Welcome to the forum, let's hope you've now put Portugal on the map!

Hi Phil, I've just re-propped to a 14x 19 ss so I'm now hitting the 40 kt mark, on a 5.3 that certainly feels fast and the acceleration is excellent! ( 90hp is max recommended size)

Hi muffin its rache,s husband roger yes there all right go for the 70hp if you have that 50hp on and fill boat with 4-5 people and gear and the first thing you will want is more power, promise!!
We had a 5m with 50hp mariner 4stroke it was ok but under powered, then got 5m with 75hp 2stroke wow this baby could shift.
If you could strech the budget as said before get a yamaha 70hp 2stroke
light and good power better than tohatsu

I have a 5m ocean pro and have just added a 75hp 2 stroke etec - haven't tried it yet but hoping for 40+ knots and economy plus no service for THREE years!!

ya, i'd go for the 70 or even something bigger if you can. Its nice to have the added hp just "in case" or if you feel like lettin the dawgs out once in awhile.

Im lookin at climbing up to a 120 from a 60 in the future.
