New 200HP Outboard - Advice Needed

The time has come to source an outboard for the new smaller Osprey (6.5m).

I ve been toying with the idea of an Etec 200HO etec, but after previous experiences I am not so sure!

The other V6's Suzuki, Honda etc all look a bit too heavy.

The new yam 4 in line could be worth a look but I am betting its expensive.

Mercury, I am not so keen on the Opti's, but does anyone have much experince with the smaller block Verado.

The Verados are a very tidy engine and mine ran with no problems whatsoever.

I had the 135hp version and you can find LOTS of information on them here; Your Source for Verado and 4S Information - Index

Don't expect any 200hp to be a frugal engine and the differences in economy are pretty minimal.

Verados 200 is an awesome engine not sure what it's like price wise compared to Suzuki or Yamaha though. But don't forget if your looking at the Verados it does come with pretty much everything you need including the battery. The digital shift is really good to use too.

Only the 6 cylinder comes with the steering now.

Don't discount opti's either. Can be had for a snip. Seen 200s for about £10k new!
Light, powerful, sound really good too.

Yeah, you can add the steering to the 4 cylinder at cost price but its not included.

Thats really cheap! I think i buy them for over 10K! Ribnet price from us for an Opti 200 is £11,1650 Retail price is £13,957. Verado 200 retail price is £15,999.00

Thanks for input guys. Merc's seem to be the front runner, however I may be stuck with an Etec, given other cost considerations.

Does anyone know what the difference is between an 200 HCX (238kg) and a 200 DHX (228kg), both are 25" HO engines, but it would be good to know why one has lost 10kg.

On a 6.5 Opsrey I would definitely go for the small block normal 200. The 190kg motor is a much better fit, and better balances the boat IMO and from what others have found. The 200HO is really for big heavy boats and american pontoon boats (though they have a separate product line for those now I think!), something that in 6.5m guise the Osprey isn't

The 200 vs 200HO debate is slightly different that the other high end motor HO v non differences due to the significant torque advantage of the big block, but in this case the light weight will bring way more benefit than the torque and extra 20hp.

forget about the money side of things i would opt for the verado
these engines are so smooth and quiet
you hardly hear them running at tick over
the warranty and parts backup in the uk through barrus is excellent not that youl need the warranty !!

Just fitted a Verado 200 to my Osprey 6.5 Vipermax and I love it

Still running her in so no news on the top end yet but I'm very happy
