Mercury 90hp outboard engine.....help!

My friend has just texted me, he's on the Menai Straights in Wales (in his 1996 Fletcher speedboat with Mercury outboard) and an alarm sounded followed by engine shutdown,

They had to call out the lifeboat but he's wondering what might be wrong with the engine, it's a 15 year old mercury 90hp

That's all the information I've got on it.

As a going in guess:

- lack of cooling (gubbed impeller , bag round the leg?)
- Lack of oil in the tank if it's a 2- stroke?

Are the two that usually cause total shutdown.

No idea what other sensors he's got on that engine.....

Only 2 sensors, overheat and low oil. Both will cause a "shutdown" if left on for long enough!

Thanks, I passed the information on, but didn't hear back, so I don't know what the fault turned out to be.
