mercury 15hp flushing question

Hello

I have a 15hp mercury 4 stroke around 10 years old that has the water intake under the cavitation plate which means you cannot use normal side fitting flush muffs. I have seen this flushing kit on ebay but it states that you should take the prop off to use it. Why is this? I would not want to take the prop off after every use, has anyone used this type of kit and can it be used successfully with the prop in place.

A garbage can aka dust bin on your side of the pond works great and quits the motor so the neighbors won't always know you just returned from an outing.

A sturdy saw horse works great to support the engine if it is removed the from the boat. No need for a special engine stand.

I modified mine for my Mercury 15 hp 2 stroke so i didn't have to remove the prop every time ,here's a picture

Thanks for the replies guys but I am still confused!

Peter - I did the trash can bucket thing, this worked fine but was a bit of a pain in the ar~e, thought it would be easier to just fir an attachment.

Johny - I cant see from the phot what mod you have made apart from fitting a hose connection, am I missing something?

Turbodiesel - the link you gave looks like the same kit I linked but the blurb on the one I looked at is copied below which says to remove the prop, this was my confusion I dont know if you need to remove the prop for it to fit or is it just advisory for some reason I havent worked out.

Dai - Good point I have changed my profile, I launched last Friday off the beach for the first time, all went really well so i am good to go. The best part was I launched and went out for just over an hour and had a great run around stack rock up to st brides and back, ease of launch means that it is worth launching just for a little spin. Are you West on the Bank holiday weekend?

I would say its fine to use with prop on, they probably have to say that to cover there ass, incase by accident someone knocked into gear. infact he contradicts himself later in the ad by saying watch hose does'nt get caught on prop?
I would go with the discounted one mentioned.

On the flush kit the connection for the hose comes straight down in the way of the prop so you have to remove the prop to fit the hose because the water pickup is above the prop unlike bigger engines where you can fit flushing muffs.
I have modified mine by soldering 20mm copper pipe to an elbow then onto a fitting to be able screw on a hose lock this now comes out between the prop so you don't have to remove every time.
As for knocking it into gear it goes without saying that when flushing any engine that common sense prevails

Try using a blue-thru fush kit. No need to take prop off and it works well. Not too expensive either. It cost me £40.99

Cliff,

You've posted 3 times since joining Ribnet, all 3 posts recommending blue-thru flushing kit. Some of these threads are pretty old (e.g. This one).

Since blue-thru are based on the IOW and you also seem to be, are you connected in any way?
