Mercury 115 Saltwater

Can anyone give me any details on the Mercury 115 Saltwater (2 stroke)

I googled it but couldn't find any useful information. I take it it's an EFI engine rather than carb.... Any idea of the fuel consumption? Also how much does it weigh?

Does anyone on here have one, are they reliable?

Edit: this is a 2005 model. I think I'm right in saying they didnt make a 115 efi...must be a card then. Is that going to be terribly thirsty??

I don't know how much this will help you but i talked to a guy who has a 6.5m ballistic with a 115 HP Nissan TLDI and he burns 13 gallons in a 60 mile run running at 3500 rpm with 3 guys on board. Not the same motor but close.

Ok I have established that this model is has carbs, is called a saltwater becasuse ithas beefed up cooling system which apparenly won't get blocked by salt, weighs in at about 156kg......

There must be someone out there with a 115 carb engine, who knows how much fuel it burns.....

I dont have a merc engine at all - but i stumbled across this web page of a fishing boat review in googles cache (the page has since been removed from the web) It talks of the merc 115 2 stroke - and the review is from 2005 so it must be the carb version also.

Anyway - on the fishing boat the review states that at 25mph they were burning 4 gallons an hour and at 35mph (flat out) they were burning 6 gallons an hour

EDIT - thinking about it though - that doesnt sound enough for a 115 carb 2-stroke surely it should be nearly double that.

I find all these fuel consumption posts interesting ,and scary, the reason being Iam trying to get an idea of the best boat , engine size for performance and economy . One thing I have yet to understand is Does the type of boat an engine is fitted to make much difference to its hourly fuel usage .

Ie a light fast hull or a slow heavy hull

A light fast hull will use less fuel at cruising speed.

Tim, I had a new one in 2005 - 4 in line carb version - on the back of a 5.3m Humber. In order to save fuel / meet emissions standrads, it had this strange arrangement where at low revs it would run on two cylinders then at about 1800 rpm move to four cylinders. This caused a power spike which made it virtually unusable in rough conditions as you would go from 5 knots to 20 knots in the blink of an eye. Swapped it quite rapidly for a 115 opti so never got to measure fuel consumption sorry.

I wonder if it's possibly to tweak it so it doesnt do that.

I saw one the other day - brand new, but last years model, which was going for a bargin price. I've bought it; should go nicely on the back of my Osprey 5.6!
