Merc Serial Number etc

Hi all

Just picked up a 4HP Mercury outboard that is intended for use on the smaller Nashers SIB.(Thanks Adrian).

Its a lot lighter than the current 4.5HP Johnson they have, and is in very good condition apart from some tidying up needing. Under the hood its like a new engine.

I'm trying to date it, but the marinepower website is not playing ball.
is there another site where the serial numbers are explained?

S/No:- 09636593

Ta

Thanks for that Codprawn, have now discovered its a 4/5HP model from looking at the schematics.

still need to figure out what year it is though.
Oh and of course find out how to get that extra 1HP from it

I have a dive cylinder with 100% 02 in if you want to borrow it

Check the part numbers of the reeds for 4 and 5 hp engines.

Hi Pete.

Mmm, the O2 sounds good.

Unfortunately the parts lists linked to the schematics on the site above not working, just a toll free number to call.

Must be another yank sight somewhere that will have it all.

Looking at the site the reed valve is the same for the 4 and 5HP models, but the reed stop is a different part number. Must allow it to open more.
Can't believe thats the only differance, must need to re-jet the carb etc?

EDIT
Just been back and had a look, there is a different nozzle, jets, etc mentioned for the 5HP.

Still struggling to age this nice little engine.

Anyone have any ideas?

It runs like the preverbial sewing machine, but I've discovered the bottom end is a bit rough, so have managed to source a 2003 one of ebay for £25.

Will whip the powerhead off soon and get the tray bead blasted before repainting it.

we used to run 20 of them on a hire fleet. i think the decals changed in about 1997/1998. so older than that. I think the decals we had loked like that, but could have been different. maybe as early as 1990? but vannot be more specific. I also think the year is often part of the serial number, so maybe 1996 or 1993???

ok, so looks like I was wrong about the year not being in the serial number, and it might be1991
