Merc 90 can anyone throw some details for me?

Hi all,
brought this from a boat that was damaged for "not a lot"! runs sweet but i dont know alot on it. Its an auto lube from the 80's i was told.
Any ideas? Are they any good?
Cheers

Nope they are rubbish - I will give you £700 for it :wink

Strong motors. Looks a tidy example. Usual things that fail are the engine mounts and tends to leak fluid from its main tilt ram. The scraper tends to come away from the seal end cap causing a weep when tilting up". The old 3 wire 3 ram system is quite hard to get hold of too but yours looks like the single ram 2 wire so you'd good

Other than that they are powerful engines. I had the 80hp for yeas on a fishing boat and it never failed us!

If its got an internal oil thank then its similar to mine. Oh its has from the piccys so not a auto blend ( external tank type ) but nice internal tank.
my 75 is still going strong 20 years on.
very good engine.
looks like mine a 1991 engine

If you dont want it i can take it off your hands LOL

I'll re-phrase, it's a two smoke outboard from the eighties when fuel was £1 a gallon!

These motors weren't favoured by the racing fraternity, due to the 1.3l Yams, Soozooks & Twatsoos being faster.

Check the compression on each cylinder - if they're all ok, then you should be able to sell it on, 'cos it could be cheap power for someone on a tight budget. Like all Mercs, their appearance stands the test of time very well, so it should look very presentable for a 20+ yo motor, when advertised for sale.

Hi

there are a lot of bad ones around but that is due to age and hours on them and not a reflection of it being a bad engine.

There are also a lot spares as many were not serviced and not flushed out.

The only down side is as the amount they drink, but for cheap power and lots of it they are great value.

I think I will stick to my frugal 4 stroke but the 90 sounds the business! Fleabay should get it moved on at a fair price
