Might be worth going down there and looking at it. Either that or taking a chance-if it's too heavy it'll still sell for the same in a few weeks when everyone isn't quite so broke. Prices are really low at the moment for everything.

I don't think I've ever seen one on the water. Turbodiesel would probably know something.

Hola Ian

This Mercury/Mariner 2 stroke is still on mass production, not for US & some other countries markets any more as new (polution issues) has 102 cc , 3.0 Kw, wot's 4,500-5,500 and weights only 18 KG. Has a two way gas valve for choosing internal gas tank for about 3/4 gallons and external with removable connector for 3.0 gal. This engine is manufactured in Japan by Tohatsu for Mer/Merc with their colors and logos.

Very economic to use, about 1/2 gal an hour, lots of fun, 360º turn around, forward, neutral, reverse, wont plane a heavy boat, but will take you there, can play with 3 prop sizes to better the push of whatever you are pushing, can be updated to 05 HP with little investment. Use a 05 HP it's bigger brother to plane a 320 SIB with 2 people, is a nice portable little engine.

Any other info you need, just email me, have parts catalogue and owners manual if needed. Go for it....

I used to work somewhere and we ran a fleet of motor boats for hire by the hour, 20 boats all with a merc 4hp on them. That was between 1995 and 1998, and this engine looks of that sort of age, maybe a bit older I do not know.

They are a good little engine, easy to strip down and repair (even for someone like me) and not at all heavy in their own right, but I don't know how they compare to other 4hp motors. I am not sure but suspect they are not a down rated 6, I have a feeling they were physically bigger.

What do you mean? The one in the ebay pic is much older imho, so I don't understand this comment.

The ebay engine may be a bit older, the only visual difference is the engine cowl shape, in the inside is the same as mine from july 2004, See atached photos and compare to ebay engine. The 2008 2 stroke models are just the same. How do I iknow, I sell them down here as Tohatsu brand.

Looking closer to ebay engine photo seems that this model only comes witht the internal gas tank and without the external conector which can be found next to the steering handle if happens to have one.

Seem to remember that the 5hp model could be switched to a remote tank as well as the internal one.

Pictures look like a short shaft so may not be long enough unless your using a bracket.

Had the 5hp version which I bought new about 95 time. It pushed a 5.95m Viper along about 4knots, but it was a long shaft so the prop was well down in clear water. A similar 4hp Yamaha but short shaft was a dismal failure and was px'd for the Merc 5hp.

thanks for info guys sounds like its worth a bid or two as its just down the road .
It will still probably fetch silly money . How a motor like that can be worth anything like half new price beats me even if it is imaculate . Its still about 12 years old .

As you don't know how old the engine is, to have the year issue clear and take the nail out, pay a visit to the seller if possible and look under the engine cowl, there must be a plate with all the engine specs including manufacturing date. Other isssue will be how long shaft do you need to fit your boat configuration so to buy, the model shown is short shaft.

Doesn't matter how many years it has as long it's in excellent condition, since the last technical update this model has not changed, newer 2008 are exactly the same, so lots of spare parts available, even Tohatsu brand which has better prices in spare parts will do. The price of a new one is around US $ 1,200.

I would go and look , but thats the problem with ebay . the chance of winning it are slim.

I think whatever shaft length I end with I will make fit. I will use a hinged mount or maybe rig up a mounting plate on the step ladder on the transom . If it gets stowed below the consul then a short shaft would be easier.

Thanks for all your help Loco good info and pics there mate

Let me know if you did purchase the Merc 4, there is a simple modification from the internal gas tank to the gas hose assy, to help avoid pressure gas leaks.

Be my guest, you are welcome any time, good luck on ebay

Found one at last
2 yr old Toghatsu 3.5 hardly used . A guy I kind of know 2oo yds up the road had it for sale .

Glad i waited i nearly bought a new one in the week , a mariner on ebay for 395 .
And the mariner / merc is not the same as the Tohatsu , only the powerhead is tohatsu the legs and covers etc are different

Main advantage i can see with the mariner version is the cover clips on like a normal motor , the tatsu is fidly with loads of screws , I have just serviced it and checked it over and i wouldn't want to remove the covers on the water but it is a bit more compact . At least the carb drain and plug are easy to get at but if the starter chord breaks you have had it .
