Mariner 75 no spark woes

OK thought it was just the kill switch as it had stooped working but with a new kill switch still not sparking. The way my luck has been going its going the be the most expensive problem there is I guess. I guessing dead stator.

Any other things to check or how do I go about diagnosing dead stator/rectifier/trigger/CDI box?

I removed the kill switch wire at the CDI and still no spark. Is there a tilt switch somewhere on the engine?

Getting less enthusiastic about boating at the minute

sorry to hear that-my mariner 75 also done this once and it was the stator.

i'm not clued up enough to say how to trace but keep this link handy-cheap bits.

Engine serial number is 09842212 if anyone can tell what year it is.

checked it this morning and there is a red and blue wire and 2 yellows coming from the stator. Open circuit between the red and blue and 100 ohms between the red and earth.

I take it this means a new stator is required?

it could be if your lucky just a bad earth, or if you have cdms fitted (square looking people call them coils) a cdm gone down ,you really need the elct test procedure that is in the service manual, unfortunutly i cannot help you with that

definately gubbed, metered it out this morning again and theres nothing where there should be something :-(

New Stator ordered so at least I wont be worrying if its going to go on me out to sea.

now struggling to remove the flywheel, tried using a normal puller, do you have to use the mariner tool for the job?

Yes unless you can make your own, you have no chance of getting it off without it and you'll probably break/distort the flywheel or hurt yourself trying any other puller.

I had the stator fail on one of these before. If you have a black stator it's not a question of If but when it'll fail. You should ensure you get the Red Stator and don't bother buying a used black one.

I've also seen all the magnets come unstuck from inside the flywheel on one of these engines where the harmless looking plug on top of the flywheel cowl was missing and rain water had got in and rusted the flywheel just a little. You'd tend to notice it though when you spun the starter! But check they're secure when you have the flywheel off.

it was the black stator so as you say no great surpeise that it died. Also have one magent loose so it will need gluing on. I have tried making a tool (to use the 3 M8 holes in the centre) but no joy so admitting defeat and leaving it in of Thurs to a chap with the tool. So all being well normal service will be resumed by the weekend!

New red stator now fitted, as i am an idiot I wrecked the flywheel by using a gear puller, one magnet broke in half (presumably by flexing). Got another used flywheel off a 115HP engine, interestingly the starter ring had a larger OD so had to change the starter as well.

Would recommend it to be done by a dealer/marine mechanic as without the flywheel puller tool its impossible to get it off and without the flywheel holding tool its very hard to torque the flywheel back on properly.

Normal service has now been resumed! Thanks for all the advice chaps.

Glad you got there in the end and fair play for admitting what went wrong.
