Mariner 40hp Oil Injection

I've got this outboard for my searider. It all runs fine, and the oil injection seems to be working fine.

Its a 1996 model, so I'm guessing its one of the last of the yamaha based 40's (as used by the rnli) but with oil-injection fitted, to compete with the more modern outboards at the time?

It seems quite a rare model, I can't find much info, want to find the specs etc.

Anyone got any experience/opinion on the injection system? seen plenty of the pre-mix models, not seen this one before.

That was my 96 mariner 40 oil injection. If its the same as mine it a Mercury one not a Yam. If it is the same pm me your email address and I'l send you the manual.

Thanks for the reply, its definatly the Yam based model. The previous owner bought it new from the dealer in 1996, but it may have been manufactured in 1995.

It looks the same as the normal premix ones from the side, but is wider, tried to show this in the photo:

I think you'll probably find that it's identical to the all the Mariner/Yamaha 40hp twin cylinders made from the late '70s to the '90s but with an autolube system and identical to most of the ex RNLI motors out there apart from the autolube. Parts and data won't be a problem from a dealer.
Cracking motors and it'll make your sr4 fly.

Had a look at the parts list and diagrams at a dealer, but we couldn't find the specs for this particular motor. I'm guessing everythings going to be the same, but with a few extra kg's in weight for the autolube??

Can't wait to get it on the boat, been at uni for the last 3 months, finally got a few weeks to think about the rib again!

Should be about right. Those twin cyl yammies are fantastic lumps. Does it have an hour meter under the cowl by any chance?

TurboDiesel would be the guy to ask for a definitive answer for anything to do with them though as it'll probably have been sold by Barrus in one way shape or form when new.

Hello,

Yes its a Yamaha based engine. Very good engine. The Autolube will have been fitted after the RNLI had finished with it. The engines come back to Barrus and get de-modified, PIRS taken off, etc etc. Then either get made into a long shaft, or short. Some go out as electric start and some with Autolube. The spec depended on what the dealer that would sell them on wanted. If you have a questions about specs etc, let me know.

Theres no hour metre. It definatly seems very good mechanically, theres a couple of minor parts that have corroded, such as the steering tube, so hopefully replacing these.

The props 10 1/2" pitch, (cant be sure till later in the week), any idea what sort of size would be suitable for the SR4? 10.5 just sounds abit low to me??

Are you sure that's not 10.5" diameter rather than pitch? Pitch should be stamped on it too.
As for prop pitches, do you know the gear ratio of the lower unit?

I'm pretty sure thats the pitch, It was probably used on a heavier boat. Just wondered what size props were usually used on the sr4's? Gear ratio is 2.00:1

Your engine will be a 2:1 gearbox. And the weights are below....

Long shaft manual start: 69.5kg
Long shaft electric start:74.5kg
Short shaft manual start: 67kg
Long shaft electric start: 72kg

Yes you can have a 10.5" pitch prop on that engine, diameter is either 12" or 11, 5/8th's.

The prop is definatly 12" in diameter, and 10.5" in pitch, not really suitable for the searider.

Looks like I need to order 14 or 15inch prop, oh and find a console, and I'm sorted

My old SR4 ran a 13" pitch on a Suz 25. if that's any help.

I ran a 15 pitch prop on a 4m flatacraft with the same engine, it flew. Rev's, I would guess 6000 give or take a 100

Remember with the water ballast a 15" will take a little longer to get moving, but with a 40 probably not such an issue as I had!

If you're ordering a new one, why not get the dealer to bring along one of each flavour to test - you are spending good money with them after all.
