Mariner 40

This is probably a very stupid question, but the Mariner 40 2 Stroke as used by the RNLI on the D Class, does it need premixed fuel put into the tank or is the oil put into a resevoir under the cowl and mixed as needed? looking at one to buy but can't have a look under cowl yet to see what is what. Is there anywhere I can get a manual for this engine while I am at it? Does the RNLI keep records of their old engines, so I can check the sellers claims for age and service record?

If its a manual start RNLI engine you will need to premix the old 100:1 some of the electric start models have an oil tank under the cowling, so you would run that on neat fuel and fill up the oil tank seperatly.

Got a look..

I got a look under the cowl and I do need to premix the fuel. It is a manual start engine. It's looking good so far, but any ideas where I can get a manual for this motor?

The only place I can think for you to get the manual etc, is from the previous owner or the RNLI if it's an ex RNLI engine.

There's plenty of manuals on ebay but you'll need to know the serial number to check the year 1st.

....what is the premix ratio? Some say 50:1, others 100:1. Is somewhere between the two better?

I did contact the RNLI and I got an e-mail back saying that they do not keep records of individual boats and to contact EP Barrus. I was also told very firmly that the only RIBS the RNLI use are Atlantics and that they do not fit 40s to them, even after i said that it was an older engine of 80s vintage. Not overly helpful in fact. Would EP Barrus be able to tell me the date of manufacture if I gave them the serial number? I tried to work it out from the literature on the Mercury website but it was not terribly clear.

...which would be correct. The D-class to which 40's are/have been fitted are not RIBs. Inflatable yes, boats yes, but certainly not rigid.

If it's an 80's vintage 40 then it'll be the same as the Yamaha 40 from the 80's. THIS is the manual you'll need:-

Or This Seloc one (not as good)

Hello, maybe. E mail me the serial number and i will have a look. If its an older one its pretty hard to tell. The newer ones i can tell you the day it was bulit etc etc.
