Mariner 4 cutting out

Hi, 1st post so hoping someone can help me

I have a 1990 Mariner 4hp (yamaha based), and it has been stored inside over the winter ( no fuel in it as used it up) . Put in brand new fuel into the tank with correct amount of oil and started up okay. But when I increase the fews at all, it starts to lose power and then cuts out completely. It will rev fine with the choke on, but not without it.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, as its time and money for it to be professionally repaired

Carb probably needs cleaning.

yep
my johnson 5hp 2 stroke had just the same problem but after a carb bath all was fine

Might also be a clogged fuel line/filter.

Might try increasing rpm (gently) while squeezing the priming bulb.

yeah, integral fuel tank in mine unfortunately, Thanks anyway though, will try and take the carb apart this weekend and leave it soaked in petrol to clean it. lets just hope it works after

Make sure the tank vent is open.

The problem is being sorted as we speak, I ended up dropping off at South Coast Outboards in Christchurch, really nice guy there who is a social member at the rowing club I am a member at, helped me out the first time I bought it and stupidly didnt realise that the fuel floods the outboard when you trim it up with the fuel still left on (moment of stupidity I know). Just waiting to here a price

. Although not really necessary he is fitting a kill switch I bought for just over a fiver, so was worth the money to try and keep my head if I end up in the river.

Bradosh, tried giving it a carb bath, a guy on Youtube decided he was going to make step by step videos on how to change the impellor, and the gear lever and even clean the carb on the identical model to mine, but even after doing all of that it still annoyingly wasn't working, but there we go, atleast I know it will be working and the kill switch will work properly and not with dodgy wiring from me

Got it repaired, apparently there was a build up in the carb which was so high up that it wasnt visible, so Paul had to use a high pressure air line to get it out. Was really good of him and only charged me a reasonable amount, no where near what I expected, I couldn't recommend him any more, quick turn around and not a total rip off
