Mariner 30 Lower unit

Arghhh! This engine is driving me mad....

On the side of the lower unit are three small holes - much smaller than the drain/fill holes. Any idea what they are for? Gearbox oil is leaking from them, which doesn't seem right....

Turning the prop there is regular resistance, which doesn't seem good either.

Those 3 small holes are water drains, will see water exiting when using muffs or removing tail from water. You shure it's gearbox oil or it's combustion leftovers if being a 2 stroke motor ?

Happy Boating

It smelt of gear oil and stained the stones it dripped onto. I'll take a sample and check it properly.

If only yet made all different lubricants, etc., very bright vivid colours all leaks might be easier to trace!

Thanks
Hugh

My 2 stroke engines sometimes leaks throw small hole located at lower leg, it's dark browm/black and gummy, but it's 2 strokes combustion leftovers. Check leg oil level if suspecting you have a leak somewhere or discard having water intrussion which generally turns gearbox into white looking oil.

Happy Boating

Yep, it was gummy stuff.

A good run at WOT helped clean things out a bit.

The oil level is fine. I will ignore it!

Thanks
Hugh
