Mariner 2.5hp stalling problem

Hi there, just wondering who can help

I recently bought a used (5 hours running time apparently) Mariner 2.5 hp 4 stroke 2009 year of manufacture. It is in brand new looking condition

Purchased on ebay and delivered by courier from Scotland, It was in its original packaging, but when it arrived there is no telling if it had been upside down etc and a bit of oil had leaked etc.

Anyway, the problem is that after approx 15 minutes running time, the engine just cuts out and then will not start for upto 10minutes. Sometimes it seems to start quicker if you take the cover off and let the air get to it?? Also, it seems to stall most when engine is barely ticking over.

From cold it starts lovely with half a pull. The only other info I can give is that on full revs it seems a bit missing, ie if it had 4 cyls would say it sounds like its running on 3 - if that makes sense.

Help !! please

Rob

Probably the carb mixture, its commonish on the small engines, but this is normally picked up when it gets a PDI from the dealer.
They come out of the factory running quite lean to pass emissions. Its a pain to put right as the mixture screw has an anti tamper cover on it. Really if i were you i would get in in under warranty!

Thanks for this turbodiesel.

Would oil sloshing around when it was being delivered got into the carb and caused any more damage? Ive run it for a good 3-4 hours my self now so should have flushed any oil through??

Do you know if the mariner warranty is transferable between owners??

many thanks

Should'nt be a problem, if it was laid down the right way, but it probably wouldnt help!. We tend to ship ours with no oil for that reason. Yes the warranty is transferable, if your not sure e mail me the serial number and i can have a look for you. If you bought it new it will have a 3 year warranty as standard, and if you have had/have it serviced by an approved dealer the warranty will be extended to 5 years.

Turbodiesel - havent got the SN yet. Will be back at my boat on friday.. Quick question. will the warranty still be valid if it has been serviced at all? The previous guy had it 2 years, used it twice for approx 5 hours and never had it serviced, as im guessing it was hardly run in??

update of problem

I took my engine into my local mariner dealer who after 10 mins on test and it hadnt stalled, rang me and told me that the 2.5 and 3.5 hp Mariners have a "known fault" causing them to stall when the fuel in the tank gets to half or below or if the engine isnt perfectly level. Appraently the vibration of the prop causes the half filled fuel tank to allow air to be sucked in and hence it stalls!! nothing you can do about it he said.. I couldnt beleive what I was hearing. apparently he said all Mariner technicians know about it!!??? Seems a bit odd from a reputable manufacturer.

Anyway, he rang back 20 minutes later and told me he had just seen the engine stall and there is no spark. He has checked the basics but not found the issue but will investigate fully on Monday!

I more pleased now 1) that he has seen it stall on a level test bed with full tank of fuel! and 2) he has seen there is no spark.

anyway thought i'd send you an update and will update further when I know its fixed

Fixed

All sorted, problem is the coil breaking down when it gets hot.
The coil will be changed under warranty
