Mariner 10hp outboard very hot tell tale.

Hi everybody, my mate has just got himself a very nice 10ft quicksilver inflatable with a mariner 10hp 2stroke, its all second hand but only done about 10 hours and looks like its just come out of the shop, got it from somebody we know, so we know its a genuine 10 hours, anyway my mate asked me to go out with him on it yesterday down anglesey mainly cos he has never done any boating and I have have, anyway at the end of a very good day I was showing him how to flush it out in a tank of water and I put my finger in the water flow from the tell tale and found it was to my mind quite hot hotter than I would expect and it was a warm day, this was within seconds of starting the engine and only running at idle speed, all my experience is with big outboards 60hp plus and I have never noticed the tell tale being hot maybe luke warm even on full power, I am hoping its just the way these small outboards run, what do you guys think.

Regards Nick.

The mariner engines of that size (8,10 and 15hp) have thermostatically controlled cooling systems. This means the engine gets hot and then the stat opens when it reaches a temp of 143degC. This will mean the tell tale comes out steaming and very hot. Completely normal so don't worry about it

But this is within say 30 seconds of starting in the water tank, does that sound right.

Nick.
