Lower unit removal of L4NA mercury(80-115 4S EFI)?

Any trikky parts regardin shift linkage or is it just to open the 5(?) bolts and let it dropp?
Any gear position to preffere? This is not the Yam/Merc but Mercury own(free aspiration Verdado type).

Drain engine oil out first or it will leak when gearbox removed.

really? are you sure? never drained an outboard gearbox yet to remove

You don't need to drain the gearbox oil you need to drain the engine oil. They are the same as the verados in that they leak engine oil out the driveshaft input in the powerhead if engine oil is not drained.

Huh? How does the oil stay in when the LU is attached?

Driveshaft seals it as it goes through seal into base of powerhead

The drive shaft seals everything off as it goes into base of powerhead.

Thank's for comments so far, interesting design re the drive shaft!

Can't see on the parts breakdown picture how the shift shaft is connected to LU, maybe just pushed into a bushing, but maybe it will all be clear when loosen the bolts first.

Shift shaft is on a spline and therefore twists to selects gear. You don't need to do anything with it when removing the box. Just ensure it aligns correctly when re installing the box.

Dont put grease on driveshaft splines when refiitting.
