Looking for used 115hp long, 4s or modern 2s

Bought an Osprey Viper 5.25 during the summer. She currently has an 'old' 93 Mariner 100hp 2s on her. Although there's nothing wrong with the Mariner, I am looking to update / upgrade the motor.

The transom is rated to 115hp and I would like to max it out, although if a deal was available on a 100hp then I'd also consider this as it currently feels a good match.

Being new to outboards I don't really have a favourite make or have experience, good or bad, of different ones.

Does anyone know of any good ones out there ? I'm hoping there is, to give me something to think about over the festive period.

Merry Christmas

The 5.25 goes well with a 115 on the back.... However weight is important, the lighter the better...

Good second hand engines are scarce so take your time to fin the right one.

Yeah, a heavier 4s compared to a 'lighterweight' 2s is a slight concern, hence taking the power to the max to hopefully compensate. I do appreciate that this reasoning might not apply to all makes and models. Even with the 100 on her just now, she flies enough for me !!!

Out of interest, would you know of a max weight for the transom, rather than a max hp ? Hull is '94, don't think there were too many 'heavy' 4s about then !

Thanks

Thanks Spartacus. A few I'd seen, a few I hadn't. Much appreciated.

Are there any reputable outboard 'dealers' on EBay ? Usual suspects being 'Fatgreen' and 'paulpatch'. I think the other EBay regular 'outboards12' is currently being mentioned (and not in a good way!) in the current Yamaha 60hp thread.

Thanks again

There are I'm sure. If I was using Ebay, then just use it as shop window. Do your research, and never hand over cash for an engine sight unseen. Genuine sellers are always available, can talk at length about the product and able to answer queries.

You want paperwork, receipts and history, and of course to see the engine running from cold. Goes without saying you'll also need a cylinder compression test. Draper make an inexpensive guage for £20 or so - so you can test yourself. You should be looking for equal pressure across all the cylinders give or take a few pounds.

What you can do is use the main dealer outboard network pages for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, etc. That gives you direct links to numerous marinas and marine workshops. Quite a few have used outboard sections which you rarely see with a Google 'find all' search. It's a little work but worth it.

Good luck with your search.

Good man, thanks, appreciate the help and advice. I won't be rushing into a purchase, but certainly don't want to miss out on a 'good' 2nd hand engine if one came along.

I don't claim to be an expert on ribs, more of an enthusiastic amateur. However my dive club has a 5.25 Osprey Viper. We have a 115HP Yam 4 stroke on the back.

Unloaded she goes really well - quick up on the plane and can happily hoon along at well over 30 knots.

Fully loaded with 6 divers she can struggle a bit - a bit bottom heavy - and struggles to trim out a bit.

Hope this is useful.

Janos

Thanks Janos, very helpful indeed. Confirms my decision to max the hp if I can. Although my cargo, if any more than just me, will probably just be my kids and not kitted out divers, I'd still like it to be 'fun' when loaded.

Cheers

115hp on a 5.25 should give you 40knots if propped right (19") However if you regularly carry that sort of payload you would want to run a shorter prop to cope. Probably 17 maybe even 15".

Now that is nice ! Looks great and is exactly what I'm looking for BUT very lardy indeed. I also have a 25kg Mariner 6hp 4s aux to hang off the transom. Don't really fancy 217kg's of Honda as well. Shame ........

Unless someone can answer my earlier query regarding max weight ???
