Last Outing Then Winterising

Hi Folks, well been a pretty poor season for myself and a mate. Two Ribs, out 5 times all year due to mechanical problems, work and weather. Anyway going to be out in the Solent mid week hopefully and then will be laying up till next year.
Now to my question, winterising a Rib! Is it something best undertaken by a marine garage with all costs incurred or can it be done yourself relatively easily. Now we are both able to do your run of the mill car maintainence no problem, but having paid for wintering last year, about £250 if i remember right is it a DIY that is pretty simple. Me thinks so but unsure of the tasks needed to ensure a trouble free start to next year. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

No Spud, don't do it!

The season ends at the End of February and starts again on the first of March.

We are out on Sunday, if the weather is poor we will go from Poole to Chichester. If it looks ok we will make a quick dash to Cherbourg for lunch.

Don't write off this time of year - you can have some of the most memorable trips in the next couple of months.

Last year we didn't winterise Blue Ice as we did do some 'unseasonal' trips. The advice we were given was to winterise if the boat/engine would be standing without use for several months.

Why bother winterising - all it really is is a bit of a service and some inhibitor to stop the bores rusting when the engine is left un-used over the winter months.

Much better to keep an eye on the weather and use the boat when the weather looks good - there can be some fantastic, freezing cold, clear and flat calm days in the winter when you have the water to your self.
If the engine gets used it shouldn't need winterising!

Have spent the last three boxing days in the Pier View in Cowes - any body fancy joining us this coming Christmas?

I've never winterised a RIB yet. Best time of year. Beautiful crisp days & no-one around. Dig out those thermals and enjoy!

Totally agree with everybody else,use it all year round,get on the thermals and a dry suit and get out on the water.

Surely, if your worried about rusting bores ect, but wanted to possibly go out through the winter, wouldn't running the engine up for 10 mins every month help prevent those probs?

I hope to use my RIB during the winter,will be out this weekend but won't be able to go out untill December as i'll be out the country for a couple of months.

Might see you this weekend as well!

Richard, got Louise's plan for the day so will probably meet up at some stage during the days events 10:00 at Calshot might be too early for a launch at Haslar so might make Warsash, we'll see!

Hi Mark,

Definately up for another trip. Graham Jelly has said that he wants to take the new stepped hull Scorpion accross as well. Perhaps we could see who else wants to come?

Hi Spud!
Using the RIB through the winter sounds like great fun, I'm envious, however if you do intend to winterise it, I'd say it's pretty simple. Last winter I called up an outboard servicing place got some instructions from the very helpful guy on the telephone and did it myself. The engine started first time 6 months later and has run flawlessly.

Well thanks for the advice good people! Mostly advising not to winterise at all and to just get out when possible. This is the best course of action i've decided, some big repair bills earlier in the year and not alot of use will be too much to bear. So as suggested thermals will be donned and crisp Autumnal and Winter days enjoyed!!!!
