Last minute Auxiliary deals?

Hi there,

I'm thinking about grabbing a 2-stroke auxiliary engine before the ban at the end of the year. I'm looking for a 5 or 6 hp long shaft for a Ribtec 585, the lighter and smaller the better. Does anyone know of any good last minute deals or dealers with too much stock?

Cheers

Will we really be seeing any bargains? As if for commercial use then they are not banned, you may see a lot of new second hand out boards available!
" yes sir second hand 5hp, how many hours, well about 5 minutes in a tank!"

You're probably right, wishful thinking

Another question, would an external or internal tank be better? I am looking at a Tohatsu 5hp LS, and the internal tank version apparently needs refilling every 45mins, which might be quite tiresome on a long trip. Is an external tank version better?

If you are going to have to carry spare fuel for the aux in a can - you might as well get a small external supply. The only obvious downside is that the "pipe/bulb" is a potential source of failure.

Other downsides of having fuel in the engine tank that spring to mind are: it will go off if you don't use it (if it is in a can it is easier to use elsewhere). The refueling issue you mentioned - which will inevitably be at the most inconvenient point. Can't connect to the main fuel tank if you need/want to (although since fuel probs are amongst the most common - perhaps should have spare supply too).

Just IMHO of course.

PS Nice dolphin pics - how much time do you have to spend on the water to capture them in all those interesting poses?

Hi Neil,

I take your point on the external fuel tank thing. If you only keep 100% fuel in the external tank and mix oil in when required, and reuse every month or so (and test the aux every month too), sounds like the best solution.

Thanks for the comments about the pics. These are actually taken from land, 1 mile from my house. The dolphins feed there most days in the summer, so pop down whenever possible. Addictive and amazing animals!

Cheers!

Would a 10 horse Mariner be of any interest to you? It's long shaft, complete with remote tank, fuel line and prop. All new. If so, I may be able to help.

Thanks Andy, I've actually just bought a 5hp Tohatsu, seems like it is a small light reliable engine and should do the job fine.

Cheers.

RIBase
The sale of new non fuel-injected 2strokes is being banned. It's too much hassle to build small EFI 2strokes so effectively all new auxiliarys are now 4bangers.

Matt,

Cheers for that. I thought I'd missed the banning of all 2 strokes.

I like to try and keep up with whats happening in the boating world and that would have been big news

Not all baned as commercial & rescue services will still be able to buy them! So you may see a lot of nearly new 2 stroke about!

Prices are actually going up. I think the ruling is that dealers are not allowed to import any new engines after end of year (except for commercial) but they can sell existing stock. Was looking at the prices of 4-6HP and in many cases the 2-strokes are now a good bit more expensive than equiv 4-stroke!
