Is it ok to transport an engine laying down ?

Collecting my new engine tomorrow, never moved one before and would like to know if its ok to lay on its side in the back of my car, it's a tohatsu 50tldi.

Oh it's not brand new, 2 year old, so I will drain the oil tank if it has any in.

yes, it's fine, but keep the powerhead a bit higher than the prop if you can-if there's any water left in the cooling system it won't run up the leg then.

4 stroke no as engine oil will run out, 2 stroke yes ok so long as you drain lube oil from tank also watch out for any bits that can get damaged, and tie down well in case of any unexpected driving hazards don't want it flying around inside car (if est type )

Yes it's a 2 stroke so no problem there, the oil tank will be drained, and I will pack it in well, going in the back of my passat (with a boot, not estate) so should be too much room to move around, I will pack lots of pillows/blankets round it anyway so it's kind of wedged in but protected if that makes sense

Am confident it will fit, it's a long shaft, but the seats in the rear fold down flat.

Even if its a long shaft - it will fit in an average estate car with the rear seats folded down. Take old cushions and blankets for support. Watch your back, the engine isn't easy to manoeuvre and weighs a hefty 93kg.

Agree regards draining 2-stroke oil, it tends to leak. Don't ask me how I know!

Thankyou to everyone who gave advice on this, I collected the engine on Friday, fitted it sat and Sunday, and gave it a good run on Monday, everything worked perfect, very happy.
