Insurance companies & outboard engine locks?

How do people lock their outboards to their boats? Does a device as described below exist?

From the insurance company:

"Underwriters are fully aware of the size of the engine and that these engines are bolted to the transom. This is normal on all large engines and is not considered a lock. The policy clearly states that they will not pay claims for stolen outboard motors “unless they are securely fastened by an outboard motor lock as well as their normal fitting device”

It is quite simple to replace one of the bolts securing the engine and replace it with a locking nut. These can be purchased from most chandlery’s or outboard motor dealers.

Due to the large number of outboard thefts in the past year, all large engines, insurers will request a copy of the purchased invoice for the lock and the key before they will pay the claim."

My insurance company required me to fit an outboard lock but there was no requirement to prove it had been fitted.

I'd change companies if they require you to produce the invoice, your insurance effectively becomes void regards your engine been stolen if you lose the invoice.
The fact you agree to the terms and conditions should be enough.

Any thief who knows what there doing will take any cut lock with them as cutters leave an individual "finger print".

My insurance has no such clause, but I still have a lock on one of my motor mounting bolts.

What I'm getting at is that even if you do/did have a lock fitted if you lost your invoice/receipt then they wouldn't payout,or do you send the invoice off when you take the policy out?

Take a picture of the lock on the boat & copy the invoice - send both to them when you take the policy out. Job done. Photo can be saved , scan of invoice can be saved etc etc .

A few minutes and mean no way the insurer can argue with you . Insurance - its what I do !

Suffice to say I should have one - but dont ! I am taking a risk I know, but such a faff to get one on my boat for a number of reasons !

So the insurance company asks for a copy of the invoice for the outboard lock. Do they also ask for a copy of the invoice for the actual outboard that was stolen?

Seems to me you could make a fortune seling the old invoices on Ebay..........

It has been known , but in the event that anything is nicked - the more suporting paperwork that shows its real value , rather than what they think its worth the better. Of course you'll only get as a max the value you put on the proposal form - so dont put to low value for the sake of a few quid in premium!

Does anybody know if this product can be sourced in the UK / Ireland? Is this an off the shelf product at most chandlers?
