As I understood it (things may have changed since I last spoke about this to Nick and Jon), the engine they have is the jet drive version which is more powerful but has different power characteristics and they had a hard time convincing Steyr to let them have a pair - whatever they are they got it up to 75mph at Coniston which gives us something to aim for!

Got that - good stuff It's a nice big test - lots of engines, lots of boats! I'll keep a copy on file for future reference.

The difference in prices was fairly staggering...

Hi Willk, I don't have my copy of MBM any more so any chance can you give me a ball-park figure for the volvo against the yanmar 8lv? What did stand out was how much quicker to accelerate both the other engines were to the yanmar.
From what I can remember the Volvo was both quicker and more economical to run than the 8LV so I imagine that unless the price difference was markedly in the 8LV's favour the volvo would be the ones to go for.

Cheers

Including drives and VAT, the Volvo was 45+k, the Yanmar 35+k

The Volvo was running a little heavier on fuel but had the edge on speed at a given rev. Top speeds recorded were the same. The acceleration in the Yanmar was much less than the Volvo. The Yanmar leg won praise. I didn't see much (anything) in there about props or gear ratios, so I don't know if that had any bearing on the results.

The Cummins (VW) didn't come out of it too well.

Many thanks for the info.

That's a big chunk of cash to get on the plane slightly faster. I think I could console myself quite well at not being able to accelerate quite as quickly as the volvo's. I have noticed that a lot of reviews (including the MBM one) have mentioned the how smooth the 8LV's are.

Just trying to work out how many interesting weekend one could afford on Islay with the 10k saved...

A few anyway - depends whether you need to be towed or carried home I guess...

Though to its credit, they liked the performance out of the v6. Certainly looks like the v8 is no match for the competitors.

Redbay have fitted a pair on an 11m. Word on the engines is good - very smooth, lots of torque (maybe too much ) and no turbo-lag. Time will tell on the outdrives. I've heard that the clutch has been redesigned (again) so watch this space. They're getting fitted to all sorts of hard boats in the UK so we should start hearing the stories - good or bad.
