Impeller change for dummies

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me or have an electronic service manual they can email for changing an impeller on a Tohatsu long shaft.

I know there is 4 bolts to remove on the lower leg but what else needs to be undone. Assume something on the gear selector?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for reply have removed trim tab, but still isn't coming off. Is there nothing else such as on the gear selector that needs to be undone.

So far I have removed the four lower leg bolts, trim tab as suggested and it's not budging

Theres the four bolts, and then a connector on the gear shift rod, it has a small pin that needs pushing out.

See no. 21 on image.

Sometimes the driveshaft spline can get stuck into the crankshaft, don't apply too much force on the cavitation plate as it will break easily. Remember to grease the driveshaft splines before reassembley.

So next question does this just need a new impeller or full kit?

I have no history of this engine and it doesn't seem to have had much tlc, also there is a snapped earth wire which from looking at some of the softer metals has been broken for a while.

On pulling off the lower leg it was full to the brim with grit.

Check the stainless steel plate and insert cup for any groves that have been worn by the impeller, but from the photo all looks okay including the gaskets. So I'd just replace the impeller and clean all the grit and mud out, then pop it all back together taking care to ensure the water pick up tube lines up.

When you slip the new impeller down the drive shaft into position and before the impeller housing is bolted down make sure that the little pin or woodruff key goes right into the slot and that the impeller turns with the shaft , also not a bad idea to clean up put a little waterproof grease on the bolts too .

Try sticking it in to YouTube, you may find an instructive video. I did for mine and it gave me lots of confidence to self service

Thanks all for your help. Had a look on you tube and couldn't find anything similar to my engine.

Also big thanks to Kieron at Rib Shop for his help and very good pricing on the parts I need

Fingers crossed it all goes back together as easily as it came apart

Some of the American you tube videos recommend putting some grease on the new impeller when you assemble. Is this a good thing to do?

Cheers

Alex

If liner cup is in good condition polish it with a very used 3 M scotchbrite pad damped in water and toothpaste in circular motion. Polish upper & circular sides including lower plate. New impeller will last very loooong and pump lot's of water.

You can grease liner with butter, cooking oil, vaseline. It's used just to rotate & accomodate impeller properly inside liner. Rotate impeller CW while sitting top housing. Don't forget shaft key...

Happy Boating

Thanks Locozodiac. I have removed all the grit. How do you get so much grit in there some of the stones were wedged firm. Assume they can come in via the prop if your wragging it in reverse through the sh!t. Cup and lower plate have been cleaned looking bling. All ready for when the new impeller arrives

If you still have very thin & small lines inside liner and lower plate, toothpaste and used 3 M pad will take care of; when sliding finger will see how smooth they have become.

Happy Boating
