Identification of Yamaha 60HP engine - 60FETO

Hello all

Your help welcomed with identifying my 60HP 2 stroke engine please (60FETO) - pictures attached: plate, engine, gauge and remote controls

I'm after a manual for it, both for maintenance and also to familiarise with the emergency procedures on the engine for fuel enrichment and ignition problems, that I can see marked on the engine, but they are not the clearest of things. Also interested in the manual pull start procedure - do you need a special cord for that?

Given other threads, I've tried looking at : Owners Manuals | Yamaha Outboards
but can't find it there.

Any other tips for this engine welcomed - I'm guessing it's far from new, but has been well-looked after, so I'm keen to keep it that way.

I had a 50hp that was very similar. Had both the owners manual and seloc workshop manual. Will see if I can dig them out.

Your engine was imported in 1992. I think you will find somebody on ebay selling CD service manuals.

Thanks to you both for that information.

You say the engine was imported in 1992 - would that have been from new, as some of the documentation I've seen that's almost right goes back to 1984?

Was this model in production for quite a long time without modification, thus the 1984 manuals are still relevant?

Or is it that sometimes these are imported second hand?

(so many questions!)

Your engine was manufactured/ imported in 1992. Stick with 1992 when you are looking for parts / or manual. Yes the 60F was launched in 1984 but has been revamped over the years. 1984 has manual choke, no oil injection and has manual spark advance. HTH Davie

you will find as i did that the 1984 models were 2 cyl as yours will have 3 pots,i believe the L denotes the year,as davie said 1992

Thanks for that all of you - yes it does have 3 pots, so it all makes sense now. I was getting confused when 1984 manuals kept appearing, so thanks alot.

could not find your engine in my CD Yamaha Manual 1984 > 2003 ( CD bought a few years ago on ebay ) but a google gave me this

Did you have any luck with a service manual as I have the identical motor only difference is mine was supposed to be a 97 model but here in Africa anything goes . I need the manual to order parts the motor is in really good nick and I want to keep it that way it is for the kids and must last.

Many thanks for following this up - and yes I did get sorted thank you.

While surprised the engine was quite as old as it is, it's a good solid and reliable thing, so hope yours is too.

A key thing for me were the sections on the emergency "got you home" procedures, which was good to work through. Plus the wiring diagram was really helpful for the remote.

So thank you very much all the same - I guess it's a tad warmer RIBbing down where you are compared to here in Orkney :o)

Looking at the age identifier (hard to see clear) it looks more like 1988. I see it as a "G"

If its in fact a "C" then it's 1991.

Can you check the letter on the plate ? It's in the bottom right corner (no the serial details it's a separate letter etched into the corner of the plate, hard to spot)

Well what a wealth of expertise we have here - amazing in a good way

I hadn't even noticed the engraved letter. But just been out, wiped off the grease and... It's a "B"

So what does that make it please?

Must admit I'm confused now - I thought it was the "L" letter that was the key to the year

It makes it exactly what Davie said right at the start, 1992. My bad! It looked like a C or G on my crappy iPad zoom, if that's not enough to convince me I need the iPad3 I don't know what is

The L denotes the shaft length, in this case Long. Obviously an S there instead would mean its short shaft.

Yams use the age identifier below. Works with "Yam" built Mariner engines of the same period too

As you see it starts in 1993 on an "A" then goes forward and back in alphabetical order, with some letters missing so as not to confuse with "E" electric start, "L" long shaft etc.

Can still be a little confusing as some letters are used more than once so common sense is needed to make sure somebody does not pass off a 25 yr old as 9 year old etc.

I'm still surprised at its age (though it works fine and is in good condition) as the RIB itself does not seem/look that old.

Is this something where a newer boat is put on an pre-used/grey import?

I'm just curious to know - the Bombard plate is shown in the first set of pics.
