how old is this damage to outboard (roughly)

Just trying to work out how old this damage is to the exhaust/mid section of a yam 50, thanks.

Not an expert in metals but looks less than a season old.

I assume hit something to do that, never seen one that bad.

engine is a early to mid 90's yamaha.

It arrived to me in this condition after being sold in good condition and everything working as it should.

Send it back if you can, only solution unless you want to spend a lot of money on it, even used parts will be expensive if you can find a mid section.

Now for the million dollar question.

Seller has stated they didn't know anything about it/notice the damage.

In all your experience, what are the chances of owning an engine like this and not noticing this damage? (go on, humour me)

If the seller never noticed that then that tells you all you need to know about the service history.

Without knowing full details and benefit of doubt, perhaps they bought it with a boat and didn't need the yam so sold it in good faith?

Either way, the engine is an economical write off unless you get a cheap mid and do the work yourself. Taking a power head off an engine of that age may have other issues (bolts snapping). I assume you bought this on eBay so you generally pay market value, just send it back. Do not even contemplate anything else, be other motors about.

Nil.

It doesn't really matter either way though. Just return the motor and get your money back.

Engine has been on the same RIB since the early 90's and I purchased it without even viewing it in person. I know, I'm really p!ssing into the wind here.

The seller says he has been unaware of any damage after having owned it for 18 months and having used it very recently. I noticed the damage within 5 minutes of trimming the engine down. However, there does seem a chance that we can come to some sort of arrangement. Sending it back isn't an option as it was trailered up to me by quite some distance. There is the suggestion that the damage was caused, or at very least made worse by the road journey yesterday, but as per the photo, the sealing gasket has been forced through the gap some time ago and has moss and cracking on it. I'm no expert, but this literally hasn't just happened.
I'm willing to take a hit on this, I've really no other choice, but as others have alluded to, this might not be all that is wrong with the engine.

Road didn't do that nor make it any worse I would think. something has been hit at speed while under way IMHO a while ago.

If you can't send it back then I would ask davie on here for a quote to fix it and go from there, he may have a used mid section to soften the blow. At the very minimum I would be wanting £500 back. Worst case you sell the gearbox and power head and chalk it up.

I've seen someone on ebay stripping the same model and have asked if they have that section of the leg available. Is Davie based in Central Scotland?

Sorry, tayport is right...my bad.

Do not buy anything until you speak to him and do some checks.

As i said, I think that has hit something so gearbox may be compromised, i.e bent prop shaft etc. The motor will need to be gone over with a fine tooth comb to make sure you end up with a usable motor after doing this. Don't assume the rest is okay, check it. Compression, corrosion, electrics , gearbox runout etc

If you are handy with spanners and do the work yourself it is probably worth fixing depending on the price of the mid section. You will also need gaskets for head and may as well change the mounts at same time so probably worth you factor those in along with normal service items.
