Pat is partialy correct. However, please remember that using the dollar/pound exchange rate will lead you down the garden path. The dollar has about the same purchasing power in the US as the pound has in the UK. Example: I pay 5 dollars a pound for sirloin steak and in the UK it is 5 pounds a pound. This applies to most things. While the dollar is low you guys in the UK should take advantage of it. Bought a 1/2lb fillet steak from Safeways yesterday for 2.75 dollars

Ok but dose anyone know how much it would cost to ship and pay the import tax etc a outboard from the states to the UK.

I worked out the cost of the 90hp at being around £3.6k from that site ???

Shipping about £500 - vat at 17.5% and maybe some duty as well.

The hardest part is finding a dealer who is interested in selling into Europe, (finding one who knows where europe is can be hard!!!!) as they quite often have restraints on selling out of their area. You'll pay around 4-500 sterling to fly it in from the East side, Miami, New York etc, plus insurance, then you'll pay 2.7% duty, 17.5% vat, plus a paperwork charge of around 20 quid.

Once you've got it here you'll need a local dealer to PDI it, and you'll only get a years warranty.

You also need to be aware that the package that you buy in the Staes can differ from what you would get here. ie, an opti in the US won't come with a rigging kit or a prop, these are extras!

Dear All
I import Plastic Military Spec Septer 20L Jerry Cans from the USA. I use Schenker Logistics in Bournemouth.
There are a standard number of charges you pay for the privilage. All must be taken into account when doing your sums. This is a real time example of charges for the import of a Jerry can order valued at £614.00

UK Customs Duty - £39.62
Fuel Surcharge - £42.00 (Based on weight (as I was flying fresh air an engine may well incur a higher cost.)
Deferment Charge - £15.00
Customs Clearence Charge - £30.00
Airline Handling - £28.00 (Getting Off the Plane)
Delivery Service - £22.50 ((To Bonded wearhouse)
VAT - £113.61 (This can be reclaimed as imput tax if
VAT registered
Delivery to your dealer - £60.00

Total £340 ish

Obviously there are economies of scale to apply but there are numerous hidden charges, hence when people look at web sites for prices of items in US dollars they look very cheap in light of the strong pound, however the charges are in GBP and thus nosaving here. The cans retail in the US for aprox £22.00 but to break even I need to sell at £33.50 and I retail at £39.99 so not much margin there....

Its something I'd always suspected. I used to import DVDs from the US and the only time it was worth it was if you managed to avoid getting clobbered for tax. It seemed to be a hit and miss thing when DVDs first came out.
When you take in to account any hassle that might be involved in warranty claims you have to seriously think about if its worth importing from the US.

What you need is a friendly airline worker who travels to the US a lot.

Having said that I have ordered mercury parts, paid all the tax and lots of carriage and still got it cheaper than the best UK price I could get.

Certainly worth doing your homework before buying from the US.

DD. I wish they would sell to me direct however I do not meet the min threshhold order levels for bulk export. I am currently trying to negotiate a distribution deal with them, however I need to demonstrate I can move large quantities. I have a source where the margin is not that much greater and I'm benefiting from the strong £ against the $. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that but I do have them in stock if you want some!!
