How Long do Spark Plugs Lasts ?

Being reading lately several brands 2 strokes engines, they recommend cleaning, regaping at each 50 hours use for best performance, nobody specifies life expectacy. So if you care for regular interval clean-ups, use correct 50:1 fuel/oil ratios, run 1/2 to full throttle constantly. Would like to know other Ribnetters experince on this issue, like brands use, clean-up & regap intervals, plugs life expectacy ?

According to my experience, Jonyruds are electrode eaters compared to Tohatsu, so will need to be changed more frecuent in order to perform well. Will others state that this statement is true ? Have had the same experience. The plugs used were Champion.

all depends on how much and how you run and the condition the engine, i have had plugs in engines for 4 or 5 years and have had no bother on the other hand on some engines the plugs need changing every year .having the correct plug and heat range helps too especially with 2 strokes ,if doing a lot of consistant slow or high speed running .with some of the early seagull engine plugs they could be stripped down and cleaned totally, i have one with a fuel priming tap on it .sad spark plug anorack that i am .

Just had mine changed out of a 4 year old ( 310 hour) Opti. It seemed to run noticably smoother on the new ones ! But at nealry £20 (x6) a plug I would hope so to ! All as per merc guidlines !

Does anyone use Iridium plugs. They are supposed to last for ages and give better performance which is supposed to justify the extra cost?

Years of use is relative as you would not have a exact total hour count unless you cary a record of the hours after boating, this would be better than nothing. Ideal would be to put a hour meter to controll better working hours, would be thinking max 300 hours plug life expectacy with 50 hours interval clean-up/regap for normal boating users and 100 hours clean/regap for constant users under daily/heavy basis use.

the ones in the opti were/ are the iridium ones ( IZFR5G) so thats why cost do much . They are supposed to be changed at 300 hours , if thats one year or 4 so no diffeance there. I guess I paid more than I needed to as I needed them soon.
