Done it! This is what I did:
Downloaded trial version of PDF Toolbox. Opened the file with it. Although the print command in the menu is still greyed out, the print icon is not. So clicking on that lets you print the file. No faffing about with password cracking.

As the trial version is time-limited and I wanted to a manual that I could print later, I then installed Adobe Distiller. Then when you print a file you get the option of choosing your printer or Distiller. Choose Distiller and it creates a new PDF file for you - without printing inhibited.

For some stupid reason they have blocked you from printing but I soon got around that!!!
Eventually found earlier manuals on Yamaha's Australian website.
