Honda BF50

Finally gotton the thing running.
There's no tell-tale running when fired up on a hose. Which hole is the tell tale, the one at the back of the mid-section cowl or the one at the back of the leg section?

I've now run it for 10mins on tick-over, it doesn't appear to be over-heating at all.

Had stat out, welded with corrosion. Took water jacket cover off, looked pretty clean in there.

Yeah, the gasket was healthy and not grown in. All the waterways that I can get at are clean. So far, it's only the stat itself, that's in poor shape.

I can't now try it again, 'til i get a new stat and stat housing gasket.

try running in a bucket to ensure its got a good supply of water. (sorry if stating the obvious)

Just serviced my Yamaha 40hp today, and the thermostat was coated in salt. Cleaned the recess and reassembled. Didn't take the water-jacket off, in case I damaged the gasket. Satisfied it's okay as the tell-tale has always been strong. Should be on everyone's maintenance schedule if DIY servicing.

The Honda 40 and 50 are pretty notorious for the telltale outlet plugging up with little bits of crap. On my 40, sometimes a wire would clear it, other times I put a high pressure jet of water back through it. The telltale is on the starboard side under the cowl; the thing on the back of the leg is something else - bypass for the exhaust or something? )

It's a bit of a mystery as to where the darn tell-tale is.

I've found a later 50 running on You Tube, the t/t is exiting under the pan on the std side. There's no outlet in that area on our's.

On mine, there was (as I recall) a sort of oblong plastic plug, with what looked like a black rubber grommet. It was, oh, six or eight inches from the rear of the motor. The grommet was the telltale exhaust.

Pull the cowl, and look for a rubber (or plastic) tube going to that area, and not obviously meant for anything else. That'll be it.

Of course, Honda may have changed the location of the telltale as well. If I still had mine, it would be going on ten or twelve years now.

Should also add that you can pull either end of that tube and run the motor to see if it or the outlet piece is plugged. Less mess if you use fresh water when doing that, though.

Traced the telltale pipe back to the block this eve. Removed the brass pipe fitting from the block, absolutely plugged solid. I went in there gently, gently twisting a 6mm drill bit with the pinkies, hoovering out the debris with a short length of garden hose on her Dyson. Eventually got it clean and clear. New stat will be here tomoz, i'll get it back together and hope all is good.
