Honda

Hi im just looking at changing my mariner 60hp 2 stroke to a honda 60hp 4 stroke. Are they good engines as they are so cheap I could get one for under £3000. Also what are your views on them.

Cheap??? Didn't think mine was, particularly . Replaced my Merc 90 4s with a Honda 90 last year. Chose it mainly because of local dealer availability - and also because almost all the hundreds of outboard powered boats the fish farms use are Honda powered. Also the Easdale ferries use them and if you saw the way they're treated (out of necessity, not abuse) you'd know they can take some stick.

Very pleased with mine now that I'm getting the boat's trim right (big difference in weight) and the right propeller.

As far as I know, the Honda outboard reputation is that they are heavy, expensive, and fairly bulletproof. Don't know anything about the 60 in particular.

I have a Valiant DR 490. I have an 60 hp etec on the tail circa 112 kg. This boat is tail heavy. I see that the new honda 60 HP (BLAST) is 108 kg. This engine should be fine.

As previously mentioned they are fairly bulletproof. My experience is that they build pretty good reliable engines which, to me, outweighs the draw backs of additional weight affecting speed etc.

I've got a 2008 Honda 50 efi which I bought second hand over a year ago which has not missed a beat. I would say that £3000 for bf60 is a good deal so long as it checks out OK. Is there only the one at that price?

No there's not a 60 at the moment but a few 50's which I wouldn't mind and a 75 but I fell that even though my rib is rated for a 80 a 75 4stroke would be rather heavy.
